There seem to be a lot of naming conventions flying up for our cars, both here and out in the world (like with Progressive for mine*). I tend to be one who notices details (my degrees are in engineering... go figure). I hope this post comes off as informative rather than just a gripe. At any rate:
It's a smart, not SMART, SMARTCAR, SMART CAR or any other variation. Just smart
smart has 3 models in the US, a fortwo Pure Coupe, a fortwo Passion Coupe, and a fortwo Passion Cabriolet. The Cabrio is in fact a Passion as well... referring to it just as a fortwo Passion could technically be a coupe or a cabriolet in that case.
That is all.
*Progressive spurred this post, as it seems every time my new cards come up or something is changed, my car changes. Apparently now I drive a car with a * under the make, and the model is smartcar. I give up
The county of fairfax and the VA DMV have my car listed a an 08 SMAR, and i seem to recall my insurance agent lists it as a SMART. Don't matter to me, the upkeep is right, and so are the smiles per mile.
On my Minnesota Vehicle Title, it lists my Pure as a Passion.... Thanks for the upgrade! I guess as long as the VIN is correct, I won't worry about it.
Haven't got the paperwork on mine to see how Indiana does it. I'll let ya know if no one else from Indiana posts first.
My guess on the Fairfax Co listing is that they can only use the first 4 letters of the make, such as: Ford, Chev, Pont, Chry, etc. Just not sure what they would do for Mercedes and Mercury..... DEFINITELY NOT the same thing!
That is quite funny. I also have Progressive and mine is listed as:
2009 Smart Fortwo Cabrio CV
So not sure how they are listing yours. Yes, it is a passion, but it still is a 42 cabrio. Passion and Pure do not even come into play when selecting anywhere on the net. You get normally year model, make, and model, and if it goes past that, it comes up with either normal for two or cabrio. Nothing more.
USAA has mine listed the same as everyone else here so ditto for that.
DMV has one of mine listed as a Smart and the other listed as a Mercedes. Try explaining that at your local tag office when you have two identical cars sitting side by side and they are wondering what is the difference without using common sense.
