Me too, still smell burning rubber at 5000 miles. Took it to the dealer, they couldn't find any problems.

What a relief, I thought someone on the assembly line in smartville left his or her lunch on my exhaust. It's more like a Renault burn in than anything German. 2,600 miles and it usually happens when I've had cueball out on the open road.

Glad i found this thread.

The smell reminds me of melting Crayola crayons.

Engine smell

I still smell the burnt engine smell even at 10,500 miles! I asked about this at the service center and they said they didn't see anything touching the engine that could cause the problem.

Just part of the Smart charm?

I'm at 30,000 miles (today) and still have the smell. To me it's just the smell of a very hot exhaust system that is being used to reduce exhaust emissions. I stopped worrying about the smell 6 months ago.

Normal smells to me, a 2000 Passat I used to own smelled the same under the hood, I'm not worried.

That and the 6 inches of dust that will accumulate on said exhaust system. Mine has more dust on it now than my Grand Am accumulated in 5 years. Must be the airflow. No worries... it's ok.
