My sniffer doesn't work, so I don't smell it; therefore it doesn't bother me. My hubby pretty much only gets to drive it when he goes out of town, so anything that might be normal will seem new to him.

Thanks for the responses, which will alleviate his concern, and the link to the previous thread (which I couldn't find when I searched before I posted -- grrr-hmph).

Happy driving!! :-)

Mine has 13200 miles and I've washed the engine with light pressure a couple of times in the past to get the grime off. And still I get the smell.

Glad to read all this. I noticed the smell right away, and although I assumed it was probably normal for a new car of this type, ya never really know until you read other's experiences too.

Thanks for the info; this place is the greatest! Now I'm out to lay a few strips of bacon on my engine manifold and change the "smell" to something tasty!

I've had my new smart for 12 months, it has 9000 'on the clock' and it still has that strange burning smell when i go to unload the boot? i'm worried because my little 01 plate died a tragic death when it developed an oil leak that caused it to 'miss-fire' (blew a hole in the base of the engine).... it's not the same thing is it? from a blonde who knows little about the workings of an engine!

I drove my car 1020 miles from Ft Lauderdale, FL to Northern Virginia and the smell was quite pronounced at around 8k miles. But it's gone away since. I currently am at 20k.

Yup. Obvious most when exiting.
Hold your nose/breath for the first 10K.
