New to Smart forum

Hi, my name is Fred, I am retired and a licenced mechanic. We had an 05 diesel new, and just traded it for a new 09 gas. I was so overwhelmed with all the improvements, that I thought we should buy a new one. I look forward to reading about interesting information. I do have a lot of experience with the old 05 diesel though. Anybody with any questions about the old ones, feel free to ask. Thanks, Fred ( really it's Larry, but that name was taken).

Hi Fred (Larry) - welcome aboard! There are some other Canadian diesel owners here so your experience is appreciated.

Where in Canada are you?, I noticed a few smart for2's in Vancouver a couple of years ago when I was over, but saw no others when I toured the Rockies and ended up at Calgary.

Location

Hi again. I am from Elora, Ontario, Canada, which is North West of Toronto. Two places closer would be 20 minutes north of Guelph or 40 minutes to Kitchener. One thing I have noticed about the gas model, even though it only has a five speed, instead of a six speed, the shift points are exactly the same. On a level road if you change gears to 2nd at 20 KPH, 3rd at 30 KPH, 4th at 40 KPH and 5th at 50 KPH, works the same as the diesel. Also the automatic function doesn't work worth a pinch. It is just like the automatic in the diesel, it doesn't change soon enough. As an example, in 06 when the car was a year old, we drove to PEI from Elora, through the States, and it cost us $60.00 CND to go there. When I drove the car, I got 77 MPG imperial.
