new smart is here - what about my orphan?

Well, no 90 day email, no pre-email, just a call at noon today that my car is here. Yeah!

A truckload of yellow smarts arrived at the dealership today and my reserved (1347) is among them. Prolly some of the last yellows...

Problem is I don't think I can sell my orphan (which I love, btw) for enough to make the purchase of a second new car this calendar year a smart decision.

My orphan is a red/silver passion loaded with every available factory option plus 48 month warranty, lo-jack with early warning, clear bra and tint (plus paint and fabric/leather protector) and the Area 451 Cruise control. It has 8623 miles and is in perfect condition.

Dealer tells me trade value is $15,000 to $15,500.

And

They are "sitting on 10 orphans right now"

To make this workable for me, I'd like to get 18.5~K

Am I just dreaming here? Or in this financial climate, days of lower gas prices and a seemingly glut of local orphans, can I make this happen without taking a bath?

Any advice?

Thanks -

Suze

Suze,

I think that you might be better off keeping "Zippy". Other options might be to lease him out. Know anyone that needs a car for a few years?

Seriously, I hope that you can get more that the 15K that you're being offered. If you hang out at SCP on a Saturday you might be able to grab an excited buyer that wants one now without paying an Orphan Price.

Good Luck!

I recommend Craigslist!! It's a great way to sell your Orphan and it's what the car dealers are doing with many trades. It's worth a shot!!

Hi Mike -

I visited my car after work today. It's pretty cute.

I got the feeling they aren't "pumping up" the orphans like in the old days. He said they advertised over the weekend and still have 10 orphans!

That leads me to believe that the famous orphan waiting list is getting pretty short! He said that people don't think of smarts as "real" cars. They're toys or 2nd or 3rd cars and people aren't buying toys these days.

Anyway, thanks for your support. If I have to let this one go I'll hope to still get my convertible someday.

I dunno, Duner... Have you had good experiences selling cars on Craigslist?

Craigslist seems to be a hotbed of cheaters, liars, lib-tards, neo-cons and creepy, sordid sex . I'm not sure I can expose my naive little smartie to all that!

Suze,
I've STILL got my Sentra for sale. Had it on Craig's List for the 45 day run. I'm thinking about re-listing it and lowering my asking price, maybe that will help.

It's a rough time to try to sell any car (or house). But, there's a world of difference in demand between a Sentra and a Fortwo!
