This is certainly one way to look at it - what's the impact on your wallet for each of those cars. The smart does well with the highest "mpd" rating for a non-hybrid car. Interesting the MSN site has links to more info on all the cars except the smart.

I think 36 is light for the Smart. I just did 1000 miles and got 42 plus @3.00 or 14 MPD. By comparison my Mustang GT gets 8.92 MPD on regular gas.
The Rover gets 6.13 MPD on Premimum.
Also factor in the cost of initial purchase and maintenance on a "Hybird".
The Smart does what it is supposed to do and I smile everytime I fill up and only need 6 or 7 gallons.
