the new york times, I've a bone to pick with ya'll.
On Jan 28 I was reading the latest New York times Automobile section and I came across lists of the journalists favurite cars, and all three of them said the Smart For two was in the section "Not In My Garage"
this is what those PIGS said, and I quote (word for word):
Dyer says:
"If you live in a city and there are dedicated parking
spots for the Smart (or you are allowed to piggy-back two into one spot), it's not completely pointless. Otherwise, I fail to see the point."
it gets worse with Cobb's statement:
"As a toy, it's "kind of" fun, as a car it leaves much to be desired. for starters I desire a transmission that shifts gears without dancing the "jerk"."
and then, downright nasty with Ulrich.
"In competition with a golfcart, the Smart is a toss up. But at least golfcarts can hold two sets of golf clubs. Whoever decided that this crude, two seat, 36 mpg tortoise was right for america should have his sierra club membership revoked."
WHO ARE THESE PIGS???
I'm writing a letter as we speak demanding an explanation, and also so as to call bull**** on their miserable methods of testing cars.
they are clearly a bunch of cheating Biased scumbags and from this day forth I'm never opening even a copy of that rag.

nothing feels better than venting a bit of spleen....

Gosh tiny smart. Dont hold back, let people know how you really feel. No need to be upset about what these people say, they have their opinion and we disagree with it, so what.

ah, yes sorry about that, well any way this is my letter to them, please tell me if I missed anything:
Dear Cobb, Ulrich, Dyer,
My name is and I love your articles about cars and etc., I however cannot Understand your rather harsh and unjust comments that label the Smart Fortwo as, essentially, "a piece of crap".
your articles stated (in the Dec. 28th issue) that the Smart was, and I quote:
I happen to be member of the Seirra club and found that comment on the offensive side.
The short term testing of the smart is inconclusive, due to the fact that all owners I've spoken with get (consistantly, mind you) 40-45 mpg and beyond after driving over 2-3k miles which is the normal "break-in" period for these cars.
My Father owns an almost bone stock "pure" with just the heated seats and aircon as optional extras, and after the 2k mile mark for break in He's now enjoying fuel economy as good as 53 mpg! I'm not joking, I'm not lying, I'm telling you the stark naked truth.
My Father has also driven it up 80mph and had very few problems regarding winds pushing the little car around, and even though cruis control is desireable my father and mother agreed after a trip to ohio that it indeed has better seats than a toyota prius.
If this how you test a Smart, is this also how you test other cars as well? I wonder what you may have missed in previous reviews? does this mean that the other reviews are much the same? does this tell me that even though most of you said the honda Fit is a good car, in the long run it's utter garbage? What is the meaning of this?
You should also understand, being car writers, that all of that extrea equipment in the "passion" will create more weight and therefore requires more fuel move around, so why not book a slightly less well optioned smart? no one will think any less of you for that.
Wolluld appreciate a reply that comes from you, the writers, and not some editor who will undoubtedly try to, if you don't mind, "Cover your ass" I believe the phrase is.
hope you are we

Ah, tinysmart, you know what they say about opinions......
I don't read things that upset me - too expensive. - know what I mean? All that stress and energy and anger! What a waste. Much cheaper to hit the delete key, change the channel or turn the page.
Peace.

Everyone is entitled to their own ridiculous opinion, or as my father says often, "opinions are like a___holes, everyone has one, and they're all full of s___t."
Besides, isn't the NY Time on the verge of bankruptcy anyway? They're not worth wasting any neurons...

tinysmart,
The language you use in your letter is still crude and immature and, as such, will be ignored. Expect neither a reply nor a printing. Invectives thrown are rarely returned by writers at the NY Times, or any other print media for that matter.
Intelligent people have differences of opinion on the value of vehicles, whether that be a smart or a Hummer. Such is life.
