Gosh tiny smart. Dont hold back, let people know how you really feel. No need to be upset about what these people say, they have their opinion and we disagree with it, so what.
My dad always told me that sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt me
Ehh, I bet these reporters all drive Camrys. They really have no passion for the automotive industry, don't understand why someone would want something different, and should really not be a reviewer/critic of automobiles. They believe a car should be functional and simple, like a refridgerator, or microwave. Because of people like this, I have trouble finding a Corvette without an automatic tranny (seriously what is the point).
But that's the issue. There are no factual errors in their statements. They are clearly stating opinions, as they have every right to do. People will disagree with such opinions.
After a full year of this car being on the road here, people should be used to the variety of opinions expressed in the media.
it sounds like to me another bunch of naysayers who have their own opinon on what is a good car and what it is not. I thought consumer reports was nasty, this my friend is the flavor we expect from native New Yorkers. The city of lunges and kicks in the pants. You know, the place of where being rude is the norm, and from that article it sounds like it is coming out.
The Smart is not everybodys cup of tea, and is sadly the most misunderstood car on the road. However, for those who own one, it is a fun car and gas friendly. You are entitled to your feedback on that story, but i agree with the moderator and those who read the letter, the point is well done, but the delivery of the message can send some really bad feedback. You do have to admit this forum is the best place to talk about Smarts.
Maybe they should let a teen like me do some of these "tests". They need people of many different age groups and style to accurately "test" a car.
But of course, if they want teens, they need the unbiased, possibly "nerdy" or "normal" types to take them for a spin. "Jocks", "varsity", or "body building bully" not included
I'm sorry Times, I'd have to say that was a little crude on that one.
I wish it were Summer, you can't boat, swim, or wear shorts in the Winter snow!
On Jan 28 I was reading the latest New York times Automobile section and I came across lists of the journalists favurite cars, and all three of them said the Smart For two was in the section "Not In My Garage"
this is what those PIGS said, and I quote (word for word):
Dyer says:
"If you live in a city and there are dedicated parking
spots for the Smart (or you are allowed to piggy-back two into one spot), it's not completely pointless. Otherwise, I fail to see the point."
it gets worse with Cobb's statement:
"As a toy, it's "kind of" fun, as a car it leaves much to be desired. for starters I desire a transmission that shifts gears without dancing the "jerk"."
and then, downright nasty with Ulrich.
"In competition with a golfcart, the Smart is a toss up. But at least golfcarts can hold two sets of golf clubs. Whoever decided that this crude, two seat, 36 mpg tortoise was right for america should have his sierra club membership revoked."
WHO ARE THESE PIGS???
I'm writing a letter as we speak demanding an explanation, and also so as to call bull**** on their miserable methods of testing cars.
they are clearly a bunch of cheating Biased scumbags and from this day forth I'm never opening even a copy of that rag.
nothing feels better than venting a bit of spleen....
Hey Tiny, take a deep breath....I happen to use the NY Times I find on the side of the road for the best fire starter every evening in my fireplace. Thats really what its best for.(except Science Tuesday)...Also realize new Yorkers are generally miserable people( I can say that ,I am a New Yorker) and are not happy without standing on long lines, find no comfort unless they can argue something out of someone for free and not comfortable unless they spent wasted time driving their gas guzzling vehicles around the block endlessly looking for an alternate side of the street parking space.........the pathology is endless. Just remember the source of the article Tiny. My father used to say there are more horses asses in this world than horses!!!!!
The smart is not the most versatile, economical, nor the fastest car on the road, the transmission does leave a lot to be desired, and, for me at least, is a toy. I can see why a reviewer wouldn't give it a glowing review.
So, the smart will always live on the fringes. I suspect that is what a lot of us like about it. It is what I like about it. It is why even though I have more than one car to drive, the smart is my daily driver.

I'm happy that the NYT dissed it.
geosynch
Just like how one would call a boat or a motorcycle a toy. It's still a car but it has that toy mentality
I throw away paper fringes, if a smart is compared to them, then I should save the fringes and make a full sheet of paper out of them!
You're HAPPY that they dissed it?
-did somebody take their daily drive yet?
Versatile, economical?
Versatile, YES!
1. small, yet it fits VERY large occupants
2. size lets it park anywhere
3. enough space to fit a one's $200 groceries
Economical, YES!
1. 40+ mpg makes it the best non-hybrid on the market!
2. 11-16k - easy on the pocket.
3. more mpgs means less time at the pump.
