Do you leave the car running at idle for errands, maybe with someone else waiting for you?
That's just a few big MPG killers. Idling IMO is the number one killer of good gas mileage. That being said, as your car breaks in it will get better mileage.
I'm taking a wild guess you only drive 5 miles or less to work, if more there are a lot of lights you're forced to sit through.
Sorry, I didn't get a chance to finish my previous post...
During the first hundreds miles, I got 21-22 MPG. Recently, at around 3,500 miles, I got 44.5 MPG on a roundtrip DC-NYC (that's I-95 and the NJ Turnpike).
Today, at 4,000, I get about 35 CITY!
So, it gets better.
As for the Scangauge, I hope that somewhere in those thread you can find the perfect setting.
Don't get discouraged... and have many smiling miles!
Mine averages around 42 for the first two tanks. This is about 50/50 highway/city. I drive in manual mode and shift as early as I can without lugging the engine. I am now trying different brands of gas to see if the mileage fluctuates. We have oxygenated gas this time of year and our octane levels are lower than in other areas -86/89/91
We have just a bit over 4,000 miles on ours. Our first tank was about 34mpg. i was disappointed. In fact, with mostly city driving we're hard pressed to get out of the 30's. However, the highway is a different story.
We took it on a 300 mile trip several weeks ago and traveled from Western Washington over a pass to Eastern Washington and back again. We were floored out going up the last part of the pass at 60mph in 4th gear - only 2 cars passed us. We tried not to go much over 65 the whole trip. After the trip we drove around town for a couple of days and then filled up at the same gas station. We averaged 47.5mpg.
wife gets well over 45...auto ALL the time
me...manual, hard and heavy on the gas ...still manage 35..with an ear full of "are you going to put out a fire?"...
My first fill-up got me 38.9. Second was a little more. Third was a little less but always in the upper 30's. All cars need a "break-in" period, I dont care what anyone says. When I first got my Prius, I was pretty upset that I only got 32mpg. It seemed like at 3000 miles, someone flipped a switch and we got up to 55mpg. Give it time
Playing with an SG the last few weeks, had it set to display mpg and throttle position (TPS). Anything above 14 or 15 TPS and you can really see the mpg drop. Also, notice the mpg increase as you coast up to a stop. The longer the coasting period, the higher mpg which helps raise the average. Check some of the hypermiling threads here; the SG will show the "pulse and glide" technique really does help. Good luck!
