News article (Re: IIHS)

Did everyone read the news on yahoo about micro cars? They are bashing them after they already said their safety ratings are great. now they are poor. What BS

Small cars don't do as well in an accident as large cars?
No kidding. I better stop driving my 510 too.

OMG! Do you mean that many years of driving my small cars has killed me?

Note to self: I am dead.

After a day of smart bashing and defending with some very personal atacks, thanks for this.

You guys may not have noticed the IIHS's actual report language. It says that micro cars are generally less safe against larger vehicles due to the size differential. That much is a given... smack a baseball against a bowling ball and the baseball will rebound farther. It takes a heck of a lot more technology and design to get a micro car to be safe against a full size truck. Smart's done really well and among all the contenders in testing it held its own.

I had a friend that forward this to me with a smart alek "Told you it was unsafe" next to it.

Well a few things that I noticed. Is it perhaps propaganda to start selling big 'American' cars? Maybe. You noticed that none of the cars listed were domestics. Why didn't they mention the Aveo? I'm sure that is more unsafe that the Smart.

You look at the car industry right now. It's in deep doo doo. No one are buying SUVs. Sales of trucks have gone down the drain. Everyone is buying more on need rather than wants, which leads down the avenues of smaller, economical cars.

Perhaps this article was written to get people to change their mind about smaller imports? Buy American!!!!Buy Hummers, Escalades, F150s, and Tauruses. Your job depends on it.

I'm thinking that is the likely scenario.

Will we ever see the insurance industry run a similar test with an Escalade vs. a Kenworth, only to conclude that the Escalade is an unsafe vehicle?

It is all politics..... The insurance Co. need a reason to raise rate on small cars. the more people buy them, the more they need to make profit on them. And, The oil co, and USA car co. need to stop the move to small cars also. They can't produce them, so, they need to eliminate them.
