They chose those 3 cars because they had recieved Good fron offset impact raiting under the standard test. No other compact or Micro car got a good raiting. So they didn't bother testing the Aveo.

Let your naysayers know that.

They also clearly stated any time a bigger car hits a smaller car the bigger car wins. So any of those sedans would lose to a SUV. Acording to the IIHS's logic we will only be save if we all drive the same size cars or trucks.

Did anybody else notice while watching this video that the smart was the only car tested that the support around the door(tridion) didn't buckle? And if they were comparing apples to apples, why did they test a 4 door Yaris and Fit? The could have just as easily tested a 2 door Yaris, and a Civic 2 door, or a mini.

I completely agree with the previous posts, there is money involved here, not sure who, but considering this is an "extreme" test, and not performed on all cars, somebodies paying big bucks to have this published. My guess is it's our tax dollars hard at work. GM can't save themselves with bailout money, so let's use it to throw mud on the competition that is making money.

out of the 3 pairs. The C-class looks much better shape than the accord and camry after the crash. The smart is against a tougher car. Too bad they didn't crash the smart against the accord and the camry.

Now how many threads were started today about IIHS????? I'm as mad about it as the next person but enough is enough. It's been argued and back and forth and venting has been done. They never even bother to mention how the smart trideon didn't even colapse while the other small cars crushed. They made huge light of it bouncing up in the air which is what I would expect my car to turn into a pinball when hit. The car may bounce around and roll possibly in crash but gee the roof doesn't colapse.

Interesting. I notice they only tested 'foreign' cars. I see no American cars in this purported 'study'. Suppose that means they're scared to pit Detroit's finest against our foreign-made devil cars??

Bad Science with worse methodology

I strongly suggest that everyone read the article carefully. The Yaris and the Fit were cited as causing specific injuries to the crash test dummies-but the statements about the smart were only about the potential for injury [no actual injuries were recorded!!!] because the tridion deformed. The IIHS has lost all credibility with me because of this report.

True. How much did the Tridion deform? Outer part or inner structure? I can't wait until they release the new rollover test results... that'll vindicate the Smart. A nephew of mine was seriously injured when his truck rolled a few months ago - the cab was crushed to about half its size. The IIHS rollover test will only give a "Good" rating if the roof load can handle 4x the weight of the entire vehicle without deforming more than 6 inches. So, for a V8 truck you're talking almost 10 tons. I don't think any truck cab handles that force now. I'd like to see if the Smart can handle 8,000 pounds on its roof. I know it can do 1,800 just fine. Google "Double decker Smart".

As I said in the other thread before it was closed, the outrage should not be that small cars aren't as safe as larger vehicles...that should be a given...it's that they are suggesting bringing back a national speed limit of 55mph based on bogus information.

Add to this, that the IIHS president, effectively created a new category (poorer) for the smart fortwo, based upon how the crash "looked". It is outrageous!

"The Smart is the smallest car we tested, so it's not surprising that its performance looked worse than the Fit's. Still both fall into the poor category, and it's hard to distinguish between poor and poorer"
