Yep, that's a new lesson for us Smart owners... not everyone is really interested in the car. Some people want what's inside it, and will distract you by going nuts over the car while they swipe something. Same thing could happen to any other car, but a rare, attention-getting car is an easy mark for a thief like that.

I plan to definitely make it tougher for thieves to get into the car if possible, or at least to get anything out of it should they get in without permission.

personally for the little bit of showing i do, id rather keep it locked. the general public doesnt have a whole lot of respect. on the other hand i can understand wanting to show the car to sell or parts for, and in that case it'd most likely would be available to enter and just have to learn not to leave valubles out in the open.
but at 1 gas station i had 2 seperate blondes (40ish and 20ish) ask me about it and i offered both a seat try out. the gentleman behind me gave me the finger in 1 hand, and 2 fingers on the other with a huge smile.

In New Jersey, pumping ones own gas is not allowed. There are times one might get out of the car to get something from the gas station store but most do not have one. I guess not having to pump ones own gas has an upside. The other good thing about not pumping ones own gas is that NJ full service prices is comparable to that other states self pump gas prices.

Same here in Oregon. No self-serve.

And according to AAA's Fuel Finder, the average price in Portland is less than in Seattle, or even Vancouver, just across the river from Portland.

The prices are lower in New Jersey than those in Philadelphia or New York City; both border NJ.

Garage
My wife had the same problem. She was putting the grandchild in the car seat and a guy in the gas station opens the driver door and sits down and starts talking about the car. Well we have concealed handguns in texas, and he was warned to exit the car or die. She was afraid he would drive off with her in the carseat. Watch out for the nuts, even if they seem harmless

I have bluetooth with my nav so I just put my cell phone in the glove box and lock it along with my iPod. I take it out every few days to charge. I'm not much of a talker, so I don't bother taking it out of the car. I suppose that wouldn't work with most people in our text happy society these days. I do know that you can lock the car with the gas cap open because I drove off without putting the gas cap back on the other day. I never got a check engine light though.

I'll mention to her to lock the car from now on when gassing.

Its this sort of BS that keeps me saying we both need to get consealed weapons permit.

I'll got talk to the station myself. No luck with police helping me out recently (identity theft victim).
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but a concealed weapon permit would be of no help here. The only reason you would pull your weapon would be if your life or somebody else is threatened. You can't even display a weapon to gain an upper hand. You might want to brush up on your state's statutes before applying.

Enjoy jail. It's a property crime, and the car isn't your castle unless it's parked in your garage that's attached to your house.
