Not A Happy Camper

Picked up my Pure orphan on Friday and have since put on 400 miles. At 375 miles my check engine light came on! My nearest dealer is 1.5 to 2 hours away so I would rather not drive there if I don't have to. Any suggestions as far as self diagnosing? There are no signs of problems other than the light, but I don't want to mess up my warranty. Is this a common problem with an easy fix? Thanks in advance.

Did you put gas in it ? Check to make sure you put the gas-cap on tight.

Get a fault code reader and tell us what number(s) it comes up with.

all excellent suggestions. with many of us (fortunately not ME) not being close to their dealer, it would be a wise investment to purchase a scanner. but yes, a loose gas cap OR over-filling your tank can cause the 'check engine' light to come on in many other vehicles and Smart is probably no different.

might even call the dealer and see if the Service Manager can suggest some things to try before you make that drive.

it happened to me 2 weeks ago. i did a "search" here and found many people with the same problem. perhaps you will want to do a search too.

when i picked it up from the dealer this past saturday they said the diagnostic tests were inconclusive and reset the light. the guys said it could be 1 or 4 things i could have done:

1. overfilled gas tank
2. not turned the gas cap until it clicks
3. leaving the car running while pumping gas
4. leaving the key in the ignition (even if car is off) while pumping gas

i work at a Mopar dealer.....yep, the "Top 4" reasons for a check engine light for us anyway.

The light came on 158 miles after putting gas in and I definatly didn't overfill. the last bar did not light up as I stopped filling when the pump first stopped after reading about problems here. Car was turned off and gas cap is currently tight. How do I reset the code? Disconect the battery? Should I do this and see if it triggers again?

interesting the last bar on the gas gauge didn't come on, same thing with me so i too know it was b/c i overfilled. i personally would not try and reset myself. perhaps others know of a way but i wanted the dealer to confirm it wasn't anything major. you in gainesville?
