Not seeing many Smarts on the road...

Maybe it's my location, but there don't seem to be many Smart Cars on the road yet. I've now driven 2200 miles mainly from New Paltz to NYC and back each weekday. I go in and back during non-rush hours, but still, ya'd think I'da seen more than just two Smarties in 3 weeks. I didn't even get to ride by for a little wave.

Do you wave when you pass a Smartie?

Ironically, there are two Smart Cars on the block where I work, near the Planetarium, and they're the ones that inspired me to get one in the first place. So I've seen as many on my block as I've seen on the road. Go figure.

There are four or five in the Dayton area - have yet to see one on the road. At this point between about six or seven thousand 451s nationwide so the odds are pretty low of crossing paths with a fellow smart owner.

It will be like this for a year or so. I know with my MINI, I bought mine 2+ years into its re-release, and still didn't see many around at the time. And even with my wife's PT cruiser (150,000 sales first year) passing another one that first year was not common.

But that's ok....I know there are about a dozen running around town now, but it feels like mine's the first!

oh yeah.....I'll wave!

I see at least 1 or 2 a day in the metro DC area.

Still have yet to see a white on silver on the road though... saw a few at Lindsay smart, but that is about it.

I have seen a few, but even when I get mine next month, there will still be less then 10k in the ENTIRE country. I think thats certainly unique.

See a few (but just a few)

in and around Chicago, we see a few converted 450's as well as a Chicago area Budget rental agency that used to rent the 450 series (I think they had about 3 or 4 in their 'fleet') but they're still a pretty rare sight. Someone mentioned the PT Cruiser, that was the same way for my first year re-issued New Beetle in '98. I even had cops stopping me just to ask to see it! Even 30K cars when all is said and done by year end will spread the smart pretty thin although I would expect some of the more popular areas for it (SoCal, parts of FL, etc.) it should be a more regular occurence. I still enjoy the second (or double-take) looks I get on the road as well as the comments at gas stations (mostly positive). Let's just hope the aura doesn't wear off and the cars all hold up well!

do the math...approximately 75 dealers delivering 25 cars/month. by the end of May, there 'may' be 10,000 smarts on the road.

.....and how many MILLIONS OF MILES of roads do we have in the U.S.? since January when our smart center in Indy opened, i've seen ONE on the road in Indianapolis. ONE. (not counting test drives by my wife and myself or while driving by the dealer)....ONE!

even after a couple YEARS, you'll see very few i would think.
