Now what?! The check-air-pressure light is on

That upside-down horseshoe with the exclamation point has lit up in the car. I can't imagine why: Not only were the tires recently checked, but I've also had N pumped into them as of last week. And the light only came on yesterday. What gives?

It could be a bad sensor. The Smart TPMS sensors are pretty fragile little buggers. I've had two so far that got "compromised" by normal handling by tire professionals. It could be that something just broke!

Ok I have a couple of quick questions.

I don't have my manual off hand so maybe someone wants to post the answers.

1: How much lower from the set PSI does it take for the TPMS to register low pressure?
2: What is the reciver distance of the TMPS. ( I have my original tires about 20' away)

So... have you checked your tire pressure in each of the tires with a gauge?

Possible slow leak, or nail? Hope not.

I had the low tire pressure light come on and one tire was about 5 psi lower than the others, also had nitrogen. I pressed the restart button, on the pod, and the light remained on. After inflating that tire to the correct pressure, I hit the restart again and it remained off.

Page 182 in the manual goes over tire related stuff, also if the tpms are faulty.

I don't know what gives, but I'd have them checked again, then reset the light. I had this happen twice within two weeks when I first got my car, and I had it checked both times. First time, pressures weren't quite right but not off by much. Second time had to add some air and it hasn't happened again in many months. Good luck.

Tire pressures

My experience with the TPM system was about three months after purchase. The low pressure light came on and I checked the tires and all were 6 psi lower than reccomended pressure. I inflated them to the proper pressure, drove the car for about one mile and the light went off. Since then, I monitor the tire pressures more often.

My TPM goes off after ahwile I drive at 70mph then slow down. Its a lame system, I am considering opening the dash and covering the light. I have always checked my tires and the only time it would help when I drive would be from a slow leak and not help in a blowout.

Mine hasn't come on since the winter. That being said, the damn thing would come on and off all of the time in the cold - even with proper pressures. It seems a bit hypersensitive I suppose.

Cold weather plays real havoc with the TPMS even here in FL. When we're in the high 20's at night and 50's during the day, the system will act up. If you check the tires and reset them at 50 degrees, they may read as underpressured at 25 degrees. . . Not sure how the physics of nitrogen would change the response vs straight air. Interesting problem for an interested party?
