Octane 93?

Okay, I've searched and probably because I'm not too savvy at it, I found nothing but something hit my mind in the past week.

So reading through the online smart fortwo manual I was reminded again that the vehicle uses 91 octane fuel. Well this is where it hit me, none of the gas stations out here sell 91 octane!

They sell:

87 (regular) 89 (mid grade) 93 (premium)

So what should I choose when I get the smart? Is 2 more octane going to make a large difference?

Does abybody else fill it with 93?

Not quite everyone.....I've used it with 87 for a few months now with little difference compared to 93. It's still hovering between 320-340 tank.

It really depends on the gas quality itself. I try to stick with the same station.

Stick with 93 and no ethanol if you can find it.

State law requires ethanol.

Okay, I just wanted to clear up a self imposed paradox.

Here in Illinois with 10% ethanol the difference between 87 and 93 is 5-mpg for my driving conditions YMMV. And due to this I know when certain gas stations are cheating (or the tank selector is broken) and sell 87 as 93.

91 is the recommended min octane. here in Ohio 91 is everywhere. if you use the lesser octane fuel your car will retard the timing to compensate. when it does this MPG suffer. The old timers ( not me) try all graded and use the one that produces the best MPG

I would fill with 95 if I could find it but 91 is premium here. But we do have stations here in Vegas that have 100 octane but it's 5 bucks a gallon, not worth it...
