Odd clicking noise ...

Clicking noise …

Motor running - idling at about 900 RPMs
Air-conditioning off
Fan on
Heat thermostat set to about 75 degrees

Every 20 seconds a “loud” click (soft clunk) noise.

Feels/sounds as if it is coming from under, middle, back of the car – in/around the motor

Appears NOT to do it when the air-condition button is engage.

Any suggestions?

Just had the 10,000 mile check-up last week and everything was fine.

Something to do with keeping the catalytic converter hot enough to function properly?

That's over my head. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

What was the outside temp at? Might have been the thermostat engaging/disengaging to control inside temp.

In some instances the A/C will still cycle especially if the defrost is on.
Sort of agree with gbryers, too - maybe thermo causing it. I don't have any other suggestions.

The A/C compressor comes on every few seconds with a clunk if you have front defrost on (knob in 12 o'clock position) and outside temp is > 40 degrees or so. That'll clunk, but if having the A/C on turns it off, you may have something screwy related to the A/C or accessory belts. It would be ironic if the switch were operating backwards.
