Ok, Now that summer is over (but still not bug season) here is what I have learned about the bugs.
Just before the Midwest Rally in June I purchased a bottle of Turtle wax Ice Spray detailer
Turtle Wax - ICE Spray Detailer
Not only was it the first detailer that worked to make the roof spotless and give me that deep shine, but it seems to work wonders getting the surface nice and slickery to keep the bugs from sticking.
Before the rally I gave the entire car a fresh McGuire's wax, and followed up with the detailer. I has tried two other detailers that didn't work as good, were more picky about application, and didn't seem to last as long.
So all summer I have been washing with a two bucket system. 1 Rinse bucket filled with water from my dehumidifier because its the only water around here that won't leave wicked water spots and deposits. The second bucket has a basic car wash with wax.
First I use the soapy water and give a quick swish over the front to get the bugs a little time to loosen. I then wash the roof working my way down the windshield (also covered in bugs) and then do the front. As I go I follow up each section with a microfiber towel from the clean dehumidifier bucket. After I rinse it I then wring out the towel and use it as a shammy to dry the car before the sun has its way with it.
When I get to the front the bugs eisly wash off.
When Im done washing and drying the car as I go, I then go back over the car with the Ice detailer. Next time I wash the car, the bugs come off easy.
The Ice also does a good job of making the front wheels easy to clean.
Oh and if anyones counting, I use two - three gallons of tap water to clean both my smart and Versa.
