Dress up

I was very pleased with the quality of the leather one I got on eBay. Even with shipping, it was about $25 and arrived in under a week:
SMART FOR2 BLACK HANDBRAKE GAITER SPECIAL RED STITCH - eBay (item 250294631750 end time Nov-12-08 07:18:56 PST)
There are other colors too.

(I have no affiliation with the seller.)

A hand brake boot is not a "fix" it is just hiding the problem. The dealer needs to find the air leak from the engine compartment and fix it! Keep in mind you may also be getting carbon monoxide from the exhaust sucked into the car. This is not normal!

I agree with Macaw 100%. A boot is not the fix.
JPs link says the problem is an improper seal on the engine cover. Have the dealer check this out.

Fumes & Heat from handbrake area

Thanks! That was my thoughts, Like putting a bandaid on a broken leg. I have a appointment for next week we will see what happens now that "I" have identified where the fumes are coming from. Two trips and they came up empty.

It never occurred to me that anyone would take the cosmetic fix of a new boot as a satisfactory resolution of whatever is the cause of the problem. I apologize if anyone thought I was suggesting hiding rather than correcting the problem.

No apology needed I just come off a little harsh online....The boot looks nice they had them at SCI last time I was over there.

Still on subject there should be no heat/air flow from the area period regardless of smell/no smell.... REMEMBER you car is under warranty take it in and get it fixed (I'm a warranty electronic repair tech) don't wait for the warranty to expire....

I did this test on my passion coupe and the handbrake did not become hot, not even slightly warm. No portion of the area where the handbrake passes through the carpet changed temperature or leaked air. This was tested while driving about 60mph for 30 minutes.

So not all fortwo's have the same problem which should be easy for the dealer to test.

That was the test. First with windows up, then one open, then two open. None of the conditions brought hot air to the hand brake area.

Some have said this occurs when the engine cover is not completely in position and tightly closed.
