no, not true. it still identifies each song individually, just deletes the space in between. MP3 may be different since as you say, it's a data file instead of a music file.
in itunes, you can specify the space as zero or "x" seconds.
just checked itunes.

-burning
-disk format-audio CD-Gap between songs
you can choose none through 5 seconds
