Option to buy - private party- need advise!!!

So i found a guy who will sell me his Black/silver passion when it arrives. He is going to buy it from the dealer then sell it to me for $17500. The only option he got was the Silver Tridon. First do you think his mark up is fair? 2nd - i was hoping on getting all of the options! So this is a large disappointment esp. with the leather and stereo. Would you guys buy it?? My DDE is over a year away and I am on many orphan lists (although I haven't heard from a single dealer yet).

Thank you!

If you don't like the configuration, don't get it. If you don't mind getting something other than you ordered, go for it. Sure there is a mark-up, but is whatever the markup is worth over a year of your life?

good point. Plus when you get the dealer marks up the price, at least it is for more options (even if it is a sealer wax and lojack). I am leaning towards passing and waiting for the orphans. It is the colors i wanted though......

thanks letsgo!

And inquire about taxes: do you both have to pay? I mean the original buyer for a new car, and you for a "second-hand" one?

We have the exact car except we also have power steering ($160) and we paid sticker price plus $389 dealer fee, plus tax, plus life insurance on the loan, and our out the door price was $16,200. So yours probably is $15,700 out the door.

Yes, you are paying a premium, but you enjoy the gas savings and pure enjoyment of the car a year early. Your decision is whether the premium is worth it to you? What kind of gas mileage do you get now? Will you save enough to make up some of that premium? Will you save on Insurance over what you drive now? Just some things to think about while you make up your mind.

Hope this helps! We have #2 on order. We love our smart.

He is paying the taxes at the dealer. It seems like he set it up where he will make 2 grand off the deal. Does one pay taxes when buying from a private party? How does that work?

You may want to inquire at your DMV (in person or on their site). It may be required to pay taxes (again) at the time your ask for a title transfer and in order to get registration and tags.

Is it fair? Only if it feels fair to you. I'd say that if you are questioning it already then you're not going to feel happy paying that price for that vehicle in the long run. The leather package would be a big deal. I don't think stereo so much because you can always add an after market system much better than the factory installed one. But based on what you've posted? Probably best to pass and wait for something closer to what you could be happy with. Make sure to keep in touch with the dealership{s} about the orphan lists. You'll also increase your chances by being flexible on colors and options.
