Orphans

My local smart center states:

" If a customer cancels their order I first have to obtain clearance from smart corporate to sell the available vehicle. At that point it is available for sale. It does not go to the next person on the reservation list since these customers have custom built their smarts."

Sounds like the next reservation holder in line does not get the chance to buy the car. There are many of us out there that would accept a different color/option than the one we configured. I would. But now the guy off the street can get it.

I think in that case you should let your dealer know you are open to other configurations and get on the orphan list ASAP.

I've been told the way the Dallas center will handle orphans is to load them up with $2995 worth of worthless dealer add ons and then offer them to anyone willing to pay the dealer greed price!

Sounds about right. The dealers make a lot more off of them if they can sell to a walk-up. Shame on me for not seeing this comming. Shame on PAG for not doing anything to give the dealers incentive to get cars to reservation holders.

The reservation really does not mean anything if you did not configure in

Yeah, I'm with jwight on this. That salesman will still want to move the car and get that commission. If you show him you mean bizness it'll probably help you get an orphan. As a salesman in retial in the past I always kept a book of my clients in need of anything so I can call them when it arrives. My 2 centavos.

What does this mean? I have a reservation, but because my turn to configure has not rolled around yet, I dont get to?

Your statement makes zero sense.

Local Orphans

My Smart dealer has had a few orphans already. They take your name for their orphan list, take another $ 99.00 refundable deposit, and go down that list in order when one comes available. No add-ons, no markup. The person at the top has currently passed up two orphans due to color and options contained.Yes, I am on that orphan ( long ) list.

Does anyone know if we can keep our original reservation all the way through configuration and production even though we bought an orphan?

There's no requirement to give them up I'm aware of.
