Correction of 7.24.08: I meant to write that I was using the 'pulse & glide' technique without COASTING IN NEUTRAL for the glide part. Sorry if I confused anyone. Here is the original post:
On the advice of some of y'all, I decided to see how the car would do on a tankful if I did NOT put it into N while pulsing and gliding. On my previous P&G+Glide tank, I avg'ed 47 according to my (miles/gallons). On this tank of P&G sans Glide, I avg'ed 45.5 mpg.
Conditions also bear mention. The 47 mpg tank occurred during warmer weather, when I had to use much more A/C than for the 45.5 mpg tank. This suggests that P&G + Glide would have been even more impressive without all of the A/C -- perhaps even up to 50 mpg.
Hypermiling threads on other forums also strongly suggest that gliding in N is slightly more effective than gliding in D.
I should add, however, that it's a bit more relaxing just using D, rather than having to shift several times per mile.
