performance

has anyone heard about the Hayabusa engine. I am going to modify my smart with every performance product available. I also am going to do some of my own modifications.

Hayabusa is no small modification

The "Hayabusa engine" modification is WAY beyond a bolt-on performance product. It is a complete transplant from a Suzuki sportbike, requiring a large amount of engineering and fabrication. It is not very practical, not to say that it would not be great fun!

I do not remember the site, but I saw the smart converted with the Hayabusa. It was ridiculous. That thing was a rocket. I would pay 10 grand to get that done. Problem is I think the conversion was more than that. I will post the link when I find again.

Under my user name in the Modification forum is the link to the bolt in Smartzuki motor and drive train assy... they have packages in varying degrees of completness... turn key is in the $10K+ range or you can just get the motor cradle and source the motor and many of the other needed items more locally and save import fees and shipping costs

I am considering a few years from now-- when there is really a used Smart car market-- of getting a well thrashed low end pure model and building it for the 1/8 mile strip here with a high HP 4 in line motorcycle motor I already have in a drag bike

I once put a 500CC Kawasaki 2 stroke triple on the back of a go cart.
I also mated a small block Chevy in a Opal GT, a 289 V8 in a Pinto, and another SB V8 in a Datsun 260Z car

You have this latent *power freakiness* within you like I also have! While stationed at EAFB in Florida in the late 60's, I took my mother-in-laws' 335hp 390 Cu" station wagon, cut the entire body off of it (with a coal chisel and a hammer!) shortened the frame 3 feet, rebuilt the 390 and put a tripower setup on it. It weighed 2400 # and was classified a beach buggy but I used it as my second car to drive to the base...even had an NCO base sticker on it. (it would have to have one)I had the most fun blowing off 396 Chevelles with that beast. Just a blast out of the past.....

I already have a few feelers out looking for a used Mitsubishi replacement motor maybe even the whole power package

The used motor would be my tinker toy playing with different cam profiles and home brew turbo and NOS explorations

I see no reason a guy could not have a reliable daily driver and a loud n Smokey weekend drag strip anomolly.... the entire power train can be swapped out in less then three hours

I have toyed around with some way to mount up the 4 cylinder Mitsubishi motor

I will most likely get the cradle and drive components for the SmartZuki and adapt to my 185HP Kawasaki motor..... still trying to figure out how they did the reverse or even if they have a reverse in the thing

This way out of my field, but I remember riding around in Spain in a Russian-made sidecar rig that had a reverse gear, and I believe such things are available for H-D sidehacks and trikes. Perhaps there is an aftermarket reversing tranny that mates to a Kawasaki.

Otherwise, I read somewhere that some Euro cycle engine conversions used a separate reversing box (resulting in a multi-speed reverse!).

At the danger of being slightly off-topic, I once ownded a Messerschmitt KR-200, and it had a neat little gizmo that let you start the engine running "backwards" (only works on a 2-cycle of course). In theory you could do 60 mph in reverse. This I never tried, obviously, since I'm still alive.
