Permissable total weight

The smart fortwo catalog states the permissable total weight as 2315 lbs.
I assume that means the maximum passenger and cargo weights would be:

coupe: 2315 - 1808 (curb weight)= 507 lbs
cabrio: 2315 - 1852 = 463 lbs

Certainly doesn't leave a lot of leeway for luggage, especially for a larger couple.

You might be surprised at how much weight is permissible even in full size cars.
All cars have a sticker in the door jamb detailing the load capacity. If you exceed this load and have an accident, your insurance company can deny coverage based on improper use of the vehicle.

when I was ga-ga over Pontiac Solstices** I was shocked to find out that the max load was like 425 or someting like that...

So, yes, the smart carries more than a Solstice/Sky...
