Hey, just wanted to give an update, we are finally working towards getting a new smart. Insurance company (geioco) took forever to move forward with the claim because they had no idea what the car was worth. when they finally gave us a number it was just over $13K b/c they said it depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot. Even though new york state requires banks to include gap insurance with all car loans I didn't think it was ok for geico to depreciate a car that clearly gains value when it gets driven off the lot. After some arguing i convinced them to give us exactly what we paid for the car. I told them if you want to argue that the value changed I will prove that it went up, so give me what I paid or we can fight a bit and you will end up giving me more. Anyway, with check in hand we spoke to dave schembri about getting help with a new car. Today we placed our order and were told it will be fast tracked, and should be in by the last week of august. This time we chose blue silver with black interior, kept the gauges, dropped power steering. Hopefully we will be up and running soon.

If the crash stops the car, your brain will pulverize itself against your forehead. End of story.

evilbean, that's great news! Your story has been my response in many discussions on safety in this car. I'm so sorry about your car but I'm thrilled for you that you were able to get a replacement so quickly and of course, that you were uninjured. Enjoy the next one!

I have smart Brabus designed, Ronal built, TUV approved "humongous" 16" front and 17" rear "monoblock VI" wheels on my car and they are official smart accessories.

I guess I am safe!

evilbean, I've raised the issue of "replacement" or "Gap Insurance" just for a case similar to yours: REPLACE a totalled car. Not just get paid for the car's estimated value at the moment.
I took the liberty of copying your post there and I'm looking forward to suggestions...

See: Gap Insurance

Agreed!

The sudden stop in acceleration would, no doubt, crush you brain against the inside of your forehead.

Hey now

Hey now
Some pics please?

I just saw on the news the other day of two cars getting into a head on accident. They were going about 55-60mph. You couldn't even recognized one of cars. The roof was gone. I can't even describe the car. Normally I'm pretty good at identifying cars but this one was so bad. Both were killed.

It's time like this where I wonder how good the tridion cell would hold up even if my body couldn't. I guess the point would be moot. Dead is dead.

Saw this online today -

Accidents: Smart ForTwo Punted By Delivery Truck, Returned By Van

Not the type of news I was looking for - but at the same time am glad to hear that the smart owner is able to walk away with some minor abrasions.

An important distinction is combined speed... 55-60mph combined or each approaching the other? In a 55-60mph crash both drivers should have a chance of survival with injury. Injury is almost unavoidable at that speed. evilbean was very fortunate. At 110-120mph, mere identification (car or person) is even a challenge. The laws of physics are unkind with that amount of force.
