Glad too that you're OK. Sorry for the car. But glad that it did what it is suppose to do in such situation: save the occupants life. That you managed to walk away is a testimony to the smart's integrity, something that we're all glad to know it's there, but never want to experience.
Keep us posted on any further developments. Good luck with the legal entanglements...
1) I'm glad you're ok, not only alive but were able to walk away from a rollover.
2) I'm almost as glad that you feel like the car saved your life. That right there says a lot... any time a driver is in a wreck, totals the car, and walks away declaring their gratitude for safety engineering, it's a win/win situation. The car did its job of protecting you.
3) While on the surface it seems callous for some of us to ask for pictures, what I find encouraging and amazing is that you would be willing to supply them. Further emphasizes #2 above.
4) Someone from a smart center - anywhere - fast track a replacement to this guy (make the insurance pay though). You can't buy better media attention.
Wow. That must have sucked to go thru, but on the other hand, the fact that you not only survived but even walked away gives you quite an amazing story. I hope it all works out with the annoying bureaucratic BS like insurance, esp since the other driver bolted.
And some advice: PLEASE call Elaine at the Smart Center in Manhattan on 41st St and 11th Ave. The # is 888.861.4228. I got my orphan in less than a week from my first phone call to her, not realizing how hard they usually are to get. And given your amazing story, she may be able to help out even more. Tell her David the unicyclist sent you!
I, too, am glad to hear you're ok, Bean. I recently traversed that same section of I-95 on a return trip from Maine to Florida in my smart car -- a treacherous drive!
I am terrified at the idea of a wreck in my smarty ... not because of injury, as I am convinced doubly by your story of the intrinsic safe nature of the car, but because of having to wait all over again for a replacement smart!
That is, of course, a small issue when compared to surviving a horrific crash.
My car is totaled, but I'm not...here's how it happened...
Driving on I95 in CT a car on the exit ramp decided to cut back into traffic. He hit the car next to me, who then slammed into me (at 70 mph). My car hit the guard rail and bounced off like a ping pong ball, rolling several times before hitting the opposite guardrail (which then flipped me right side up). Thank god I was wearing my seatbelt, and driving this amazing car. I opened the door and stepped out. Very shaken, but not hurt. I'm a little stiff now, the next day, but other than that I'm perfectly fine. Time to get on the orphan list for another smart. MY SMART SAVED MY LIFE!!!
When and where? I'm exit 17, but havent been on the highway since late yesterday afternoon.
Glad that you are safe (and wearing a seatbelt, very key) and that this car has lived up to its promise. Now, all we need is the pics to show the naysayers to prove that even with an accident you can survive!
