The simple solution is to buy your Smart in the USA and drive down to Mexico's colonial cities or the coastal beaches. You can easily convince yourself that you are in Spain or the riviera; maybe even Morocco.

We have been taking two carry-on bags and a shoulder bag with cameras, guides, laptop etc. for a 2 to 3 week trip, so it's not like we make a Grand Tour. However it's very expensive to ship from Europe to America even by slow boat and we like to take advantage of the wine bargains found over there. Thus we carry our clothes onto the plane home and check our cases of wine.

FYI we have brought more than a dozen cases into the US over the last 5 or 6 years and have never been charged any duty, we just declare them upon entry. Also even with unfavorable exchange rates the dollar cost at the winery is around 25% of US retail. We use the standard cardboard boxes, well taped and have only had 1 bottle break.
