I just got back from my smart dealer (not yet officially open) and I had a chance to sit in one of the passions. The plastic roof seemed VERY VERY flimsy. Any one else with this impression?
Yes, it is very flexible (not to be confused with flimsy!) If you had seen the smart videos of the guy on the bicycle, bouncing all over the passion coupe from one end to the other, you get the feeling its quite sturdy!

My sales rep. told me that the roof uses the same materials as what NASA uses on their space shuttle. So, I wouldn't think they are going to be flimsy.

Hummers have very sturdy roofs, and get 9 miles per gallon. If it's thick roof and weight you want you're buying the wrong car. Most manufacturers are doing what they can to reduce weight. Using a lightweight but strong material is the way to go these days.

hey, for me. as long as it's watertight, i'd actually rather have a lexan roof than a glass one in a crash.
This roof is made with polycarbonate, it may be thin but it is very strong and much safer than glass. Also on such a narrow and tall car the last thing you want is a top heavy roof.

And there are some sales reps saying that it costs $499 to prep and document a 8 ft smart. NASA also uses paper and aluminum.
Well at the going shop rate for MB dealers, I suspect 499 is fairly cheep in the prep factor and the poor lady doing the paper work and driving all the way to the DMV ect.
