Possible solution for the LONG wait.

Today I was thinking about all of the people who are waiting to receive their new Smart. Some of these people have waited a year or longer, and for many of these people the worst part about buying a Smart is the long wait. The way that Smart is handling this is unacceptable to me and so I was thinking about how to best make that wait period shorter. I have come up with a possible solution, but I wanted to pass it through you guys (and gals) first to see what you think

First of all Smart needs to set up a national network where all orphans can be put in a database. Dealerships would be required to document all non-sold Smarts in their dealership lots. A website would be set up where the dealers could do this, and the same website would be used for phase two, which is when a customer buys a Smart and is put on the waiting list the dealership (we'll call him dealership A) would first go to this national database and fill out a form where they would check off what options the customer wants. The database would then check to see if another dealer (dealership B) has a car with those same features already in stock. If he does, then that car would immediately be sent to dealer A. Once at the dealership the cars color could easily be changed to meet the customers requirements. This whole entire process would take from 2-4 weeks, which is a hell of a lot less than waiting a year or more for a car. Not only that but because Smart doesn't have to duplicate making the same car on their assembly line, they can now focus on making another car, thus speeding up the entire process for everyone else. It's a win-win solution.

For example; say you want a red Smart that has x/y/z options and you live in New York. Your dealer would check the national database and see that a blue Smart with those same exact options is sitting in a lot in California. So now that blue Smart can be immediately sent to his dealership, and once there, the blue panels would be swamped out for red ones. Voila, the car your customer wants is now available for them to take delivery on. Everyone would win

Example Two; Same as above only the car has two out of three options (x/y instead of x/y/z) that the customer wants. This would also show up in the dealers websites database, and now the dealer can ask/offer the customer this car instead of waiting. The idea here is that instead of having all of these cars sitting in dealers lots nationwide, they can now be placed into good homes, which is what adopting an orphan is all about

So what do you guys think? It would help to get Smarts delivered quicker right?

Dealers WANT orphans! That's where they load them up and make their profit! There's no way they're gonna accept any changes to the current arrangement.

absolutely agree they can sell a 13 or 14k dollar car for nearly 20g's if they load it up with useless things you don't really want and they bank on those wanting whatever they can get their hands on paying more, to hell with fairness its all about money

You are forgetting the fact that Penske wants to make money here too ;) If they make it part of their dealer agreement then the dealers need to abide by that agreement. The bottom line is that more cars that are moved and sold the more money Penske (and the dealers) make.

Who's going to foot the bill for the organization of all of this/paying someone to prepare it for shipping/paying for the truck to go between dealerships to pick up each individual car/transport it/potential damages?

The destination fee is just that, transportation to the destination, not to the destination and then across the US for someone who didn't have the foresight and/or patience to reserve like the rest of us

I'm not at all harping on people who got their orphans - it's great that they were able to find exactly what they wanted or close to it abandoned at a dealership. Expecting there to be additional overhead to subvert those of us who are waiting is kind of silly and will piss off a lot more people than it will help.

orphan proposed system

I agree this could be a good idea. But, I have turned down 2 orphans because they were loaded with useless stuff that totaled about $1,500-$2,000. They even added the $120 clock and tach and were charging about $600. Since I don't have to have this car now, it's a matter or principle to say NO to this kind of gouging.

The database/website would have no cost. The form/database could be made in less than an hour by any qualified admin and Smart could easily sub-domain it on their site. Seeing how you could fit a lot of Smarts on a truck it would simply be a matter of setting up timed shuttles, then divide the cost. Penske would be responsible and since they would be selling more cars and making more profit it would be in their best interest too. At the very least it should be an option offered to those who are waiting ;)

I'm not sure I follow the logic here. Penske is selling every car they can bring into the country, so I don't see how they will sell more cars or make more profit.

We're talking about the cars that are just SITTING in dealership lots.

They are not in peoples driveways where they belong ;)

The best way to handle this is not buy loaded orphans and let them pile up on lots. Dealers would change their behavior.
