Power steering is to assist in parking. The car weighs under 2K pounds. It can't be an issue unless you have a medical problem....

Do a search on this forum. Plenty of answers on tap for your consideration. Some will say yes, and some will say no. Flip a coin.

Since my orphan came with the comfort package I have the power steering, but I can't believe it needs it much at all. I wouldn't care to pay for it unless you were going to get the comfort package anyway.

My orphan was offered with no power steering and at first I was skeptical, but after a test drive I realized I like it better without. The car is light enough to easily turn the wheel while parked, and I think the manual gives a better "feel" for such a small car when you are driving. The power steering in my other car (Toyota Camry) is about the same resistance as the non-power in the Smart when stopped. It seems like an unnecessary expense to have power steering, and it gives you one less thing to fix or maintain. You're fine without.

Do try to drive both so you can determine what you personally prefer.

I can only say that the steering feel was great, not overboosted at all, on the car with power steering that I test drove.

My orphan came without power steering, I would not order it if I reserved another one, it steers fine without it.

Only reason I thought about PS was for my 5'0'' 100lb wife (who'll probably only drive it Rarely if at all), and having has lightweight, manual steering cars before, decided against it. She's small, but she's not weak, and I used to drive a 65' Cadillac with a bad power steering pump. She won't need it, and I sure won't.

If you plan on putting wider tires on the front, it may help.

I turned the ignition off and was able to turn the wheel with little effort. It reminded me of the feel of the steering in my old Fiat X-1/9 with its rear mounted engine.

I had ordered PS, but was having second thoughts. I went to the dealership and drove both.

First the NPS, which was a a bit challenging to turn. I am 5' and had shoulder surgery a couple years back and that may have a bit to do with less than stellar strength......however, I then drove the PS.

It was a really good decision to have ordered it. It made turning so much easier. I just don't see any point in having to crank that wheel.
