Premium Fuel for Smart?

According to the brochure, Premium fuel is required. Is it possible that they built an economy car that needs Premium? That seems a little silly to me.

What's even sillier is not doing a search to find that the subject has been beaten to death in other threads.

Forgive Carnut please. He spends to much time on the Forum and forgets there are newbies here and not necessarily familiar with forms like this, me either sometimes. 3 cylinder hi performance engine, high compression engine needs premium to run efficiently. You could use lower octane but loose efficiencey and power. Your choice.

I like the smart car too, but I'm not too glassy eyed to defend their choice of of choosing an engine that requires premium fuel and only makes 70hp/liter. That may be high performance by 1970 standards, but it is pretty common these days for a NA engine to make that much power on regular. If it made 100hp/liter then I would have no complaint on using premium fuel.

Uh... OK... If you buy a car that gets 30 MPG on regular or a car that gets 40 MPG on premium, which would you choose?

I thought the Premium Fuel was an Emissions Issue?

Was the Premium Fuel requirement just for mileage? I thought it was so the 451 would pass the emissions standards here in the States.

We also have to take the SIZE of the car into consideration people. Small engine, high compression.... The cost in negligible for premium... its only a 10 gallon tank!
