Price

Is is true that once I confirgure my SMART and get a price, that price is locked-in although I do not get the car for 18 months later?

Hmm...this is a good question. Not sure about what the pricing will be with 2009 model year coming out and the lower value of the dallar. My guess is that there's going to be a pricing adjustment. Hopefully not for too much.

If there is going to be changes in price or options, my understanding is that you'd be given a choice of accepting the new terms or opt out.

I don't think anybody is waiting 18 months after configuration.

And I haven't heard of any body's price being different at delivery than at configuration. That being said, I don't think smart is obligated to sell at the configuration price.

Who here has read the fine print?

When I reserved mine in April 2007, I was given an estimated price. When I configured, I was given a quote (very close to the estimate) and told it may vary slightly. My dealer charged me exactly what I was quoted when I picked up in May 2008.

2009 models will be different and I expect them to cost a couple grand more due to added MHD, other features, falling dollar (since mid 2007) and other factors. They're still pressured to keep the price in line with a Yaris and Fit, if only to get a few more people to realize there are three options instead of two. When it comes down to it, you'll get your quote at configuration time... which I think is on hold for a few months. You have the choice then to decline or accept, and worst case you can decline when the dealer calls you.

When I went in to test drive, I overheard a salesman telling a potential customer that the price was not locked in and could change. The woman was shocked that she would have to wait to get the car and that the price would be whatever they are selling for at time of delivery. She was telling him how unfair this was. Overhearing this is also what helped me decide to take the Orphan that day. I would hate to have waited thinking I was getting the car at one price and a year later when it shows up having to pay a higher price. I can understand however.

since my car wasnt going to be til probably 2009, when it was to originally be a December 2008, I was told when I called SMART directly, that yes, even if I got a newer model (2009) my price was locked in...so I'd get the new model for the price of the old. Your price is locked.

Based on the experience of the folks here you are locked into MSRP and that is now subject to an increase, how much I don't know but you have the oppertunity to bail out...
