JD Powers just rated the smart as the worst car with the most issues. The best is Lexus followed by a tie with Porsche and now Jaguar which jumped up considerably. Perhaps Indian ownership has helped the brand.
Don't shoot the messenger please. I love my car except for a few issues which disappoint me, for I feel the manufacturer doesn't respect us in any fashion, yet is out to get our money no matter what.
I can tell you from a mechanics point of view, the most expensive cars have the most modules and require the most software updates for the most Control Unit glitches. In all likelihood the vehicles with the least modules would be affected the least.
I have owned my smart for one year, and while I would say the blower fan is definitely an issue in our cars, I could pick out almost any car off that list and find five other common problems with any of them.
JD Powers claims to be independent but is not. Additionally most people with expensive cars will not bash their own cars, because otherwise they would look like the idiots. Furthermore, Expensive car dealers go out of their way to "make it right".
Isn't it funny that Porsche is on the top Audi is in the middle and Volkswagen is at the bottom, yet they all share the same parent company? And Volkswagen and Audi share very many of the same parts.
I don't believe anything on that list. Not because its not true, just because it is there to help sell cars.
Only issue with my smart electrics, are burned out head lamps. The 500 I've had now for 10 months now, no issues so far. Wonder what type of software issues the cars have? My smart has only had software updates twice in 4 years. Just for the transmission.
Very surprise my Honda isn't a lot lower. Two major recalls from Honda. Drivers doors switches would start fire when wet. Headlamps short out, and start a fire too. At least Honda seads out the recalls, and fixes it issues.

JD power is a joke. The vehicles they get are "hand picked" looked at like 20 more times then any normal vehicle. I will never believe anything they say.

they go off owner surveys... so, they don't get cherry-picked cars. How people report, though, can be a bit flaky. If the customer is well cared for do they under-report? I don't know the answer to that, but this isn't like a review from Motor Trend etc...
Last time I got a survey from them it came with a dollar bill inside the envelope , for my trouble lol . The surveys are not very good in the way their structured , I won't fill anymore out , they are a nuisance .
I will say one thing: the more I know about modern cars and where they're headed electronically, the more I like my 1966 Peugeot 404 Coupé with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection.

I usually don't fill out surveys either, but I know a lot of people use this one to make their decision which car to buy, so I do this one as a community service.

If you spent more than anyone else for your car and it had problems, there is a good chance you would not be willing to admit your mistake
