All my cars (4) are paid off and I still carry full coverage, too many people out there without insurance to risk the loss. All my cars also have 100% windshield replacement with no deductable, the windshield in my Commander is also $1,200.

Windshield covered by comprehensive

State Farm told me that windshields are covered with no deductible on the comprehensive part of my policy. No worries...

Be sure to ask specifically. They do "repairs" at no charge, but normally there is a deductible for "replacement" it depends on what your comprehensive is on the car.

I just went through this last week with the very same thing and I think I learned more than I wanted to. I have never had to replace a windshield in any of my cars so this was new for me.

Now that I own a home I also upped my coverage to 200/300/200 to make sure if someone trying to slap a law suit on me the insurance will cover it. When I switched over to Liberty Mutual even with tripling my coverage and lowering my deductibles my monthly went down... Geico was screwing me and I never knew it.

Back to the original repair quote, I agree with Meat questioning the specific terms of the estimate and their "rights' to conduct the work at any price over that estimate without gaining your approval first. I went over my old estimates (non-smart vehicles), and they were fairly specific about what they can do or not do without your approval.

If for no other reason than to educate the rest of us when it comes to repair estimates at Smart service departments, we'd really like to know whether or not the smart service had the right to hold you to the final charges?

Thanks!

You guys all suck. You scared me into calling my insurance company. In Delaware they do not have windshield replacement amendments to your policiy. It fall under the comprehensive part of your insurance. I just changed my policy to have a $0 deductible and now I am paying $36 more a year. Guess its worth it.

I think insurance is like airline tickets - there is absolutely no rationale for the cost. I'm a current Geico insuree, but checked Liberty Mutual when I got my smart. For exactly the same coverage Liberty Mutual was three times what I'm paying with Geico. My momma told me . . . . - sheureka

Interesting, that makes me think they must adjust rates by state or even city or some strange stuff like that. Until I reserved the smart I knew nothing about insurance, then I called 9 or 10 companies to get rate quotes to see what made best sense and Liberty Mutual was the best here in SE VA for my needs. Geico couldn't touch it. So I took my old car, my partners car, and our home and moved it to Liberty Mutual. (Geico nor Allstate were too happy.) (They did mention your DMV has to be spotless to get their excellent rates. I also went in and talked with the local manager, she was awesome and found me discounts everywhere to make the price even lower.)

I think the moral of the story is it all depends on where you are located...

Sheureka, they probably have a dart board with rates...

Not an insurance agent, nor do I play one on TV, but your company can explain how your rates are calculated if you ask them. It's a mix of accident rates where you live, your driving history, repair costs for your vehicle, state regulations, your age, etc., etc. IMHO, it's difficult to know if you're getting the best deal for you, your car, in your area, or not without sharing information as we do on this (and other ) forum(s)
