Garage
ex: WMEEJ31X38K123456

WME = smart
E = 451
J/K = coupé/cabriolet
31 = 70 HP engine
X = passive restraints
9th digit = checksum
8 = 2008 M.Y.
K = assembly building K, Hambach
123456 = serial #

For 2006 and earlier smart vehicles, the VIN decodes differently:

Digits:
1-3 World-vendor code (WME=smart)
4-6 Series: 450=city-coupe/cabrio, 452=roadster/roadster-coupe, 454=forfour
7 Body shape: 3 = coupe, 4 = Convertible / Roadster
8+9 Engine: 00 = 30 kW diesel, 30 = 37 kW petrol, 32 = 45 kW petrol, 33 = 35 kW petrol, 34 = 60 kW petrol, 35 = 40 kW petrol
10 Steering: 1 = Left hand drive, 2 = Right Hand drive
11 Factory: J, K, L stand for several buildings in smartville / Hambach (F)
12-17 Consecutive unit number

For example, my 2003 smart G&K conversion for the US has VIN WME4503321Jnnnnnn

WME -> smart
450 -> 450 series
3 -> coupe
32 -> 45 kW petrol engine
1 -> left hand drive
J -> Factory

INTERESTING........that you can't tell on 450's from the VIN what YEAR it is? usually it's the 10th digit. been that way, i thought, ON ALL VEHICLES since 1980!!!

From another post.
JPaul,

Thanks for this re-post. I only have the last 6 digits from the R11 screen shot "A12395". I thought read somewhere these partial VIN's could have an A,B, or C in front of them which correspond to either a 1,2, or 3, so in this case my VIN serial number would be 112395.

I searched over a 100 threads/posts yesterday and couldn't find the expanded explanation. The drill I'm working is to construct my VIN. My guess at it is: WMEEK31XX8K112395, the only remaining question is how to compute the checksum for the ninth digit. The car is a Cabrio, it is scheduled to built Thursday 6/5 and arrive in San Diego 7/25.

If you know of another thread that has this sort of analysis in it, I'd appreciate a link to it. I'd like to be able to track it's progress on the ocean.

Additional info...I found a website that explains how to calculate the checksum digit, in this case it is 6, so the actual VIN should end up as: WMEEK31X68K112395..

The checksum website is:

VIN Codes: Check Digits

So, tell me how you got the information that your car is scheduled to be built on 6/5 and due in San Diego on 7/25? My car is supposed to be in production, but I haven't got any information at all.

I asked my smart center for a print out of the R11 screen page from their computer system. They didn't know it was called the R11 page, but after I told them some of the info it contains they realized that they look at them regularly once a car gets into the production phase. I'll to post a copy of what I was provided...It's a little fuzzy but readable.
