The best thing for your car is to keep it away from car washes. The last time I took a car through one was my company car years ago.

My smart is sitting out the winter, but I do take my everyday/winter car (Passat w/winter tires) to a coin-op spray it yourself place during the winter. Like Bill says, winter crud builds up on the cars, and it's just nasty. Also, it keeps the crud away from your driveway. A couple of winters ago, we also had our Mini on the road during the winter. Between washing the two cars and sand-laden slush falling off them, when I cleaned the driveway in the spring I swept up enough sand and dirt to fill a 5-gallon bucket.

About this time every year I think about moving to someplace south.

I'm over 6000 miles and I still find a very noticeable 'burning' smell after driving. Yesterday my friend parked next to me @ happy hour and asked which of us burned our clutch getting there. As long as it is normal it does not bother me.

It is normal, even @ 6k, right?

Oops, probably broke the forum rules with that one...

To bring it back somewhat on topic, people used to cook food in the engine compartment or with actual engine exhaust in the old days:

Many current webpages extol the virtues of manifold cooking:

So what's there to worry about with a little engine smell on your food?
Gives an all NEW definition of "Smoked Food" ....

hmmm....smart fried chicken....engine oil supreme....manifold tacos....horsepower pizza....mpg pasta....burnin' broccoli....

I would'nt worry about an engine smell, that's just it getting some warmup exercise so it'll be ready to go after the breaking in.

As for engine heat, added comfort for the negative degree winter!

Cooking can be such 'exhaust-ting' work.

I kind of got a quick smile out of that. I am here in Texas, Central Texas. And every so often, they do put sand on the bridges due to a freak freeze coming in. So you might have WAY LESS. But you will still have it.

Hmm, I wonder if something is not rubbing against the exhaust and burning thru. Like a hose of some sort. I am getting near to the 1k mark, like less then 100 miles, and my smell went away after the first 100 or so. I think if I still had it at 6k I would be looking for an answer to the smell. If it is a hose rubbing/burning. Smart should replace/reroute it.
