I think the Canadians said it pretty well:

Small cars fare worse than big cars: Really?

"Dear National Post readers, lend me your voice. Let us all join hands in one large community of common sense and give an organization called the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States a loud Canadian "Duh!" for scientifically proving what all of us already knew. I mean, seriously, did we really need a comprehensive study to tell us that when a big thing hits a little thing, the little thing -- and anything inside the little thing -- is going to be worse off than the big thing and anything inside it? Jeez, one-year-old children learn this for the first time about two days after they learn to walk upright."

Thinking about this a little more:

By rough estimate the 31,000 smart cars on the road have gone about 246 million miles, assuming an average of 1,000 miles per month.

Using the current NHST statistics (FARS Encyclopedia) of 1.36 deaths per 100 million miles would show that our community would have lost 3.35 drivers/ passengers by now.

It seems like we are doing better than average.

Yeah, Fox News bashed the smart twice already, even though they said the Yaris driver's head impacted the steering wheel.

Long live smart! Short live my electricity! (stupid severe thunderstorm)

Overall, I haven't ran into anyone in public that has seen that crash. The only person who seen that crash on TV was an older couple at my church that already loves my smart...and still does after the fact. Even they agreed that they'd rather do a little spin than crumple up...

This seems to fit the thinking of the IIHS and the Major News Media:

And so would most practitioners of Aikido. Use enemy's energy against him. He lunges, you step aside and encourage him to keep moving. Maybe the Smart designers are martial art experts.

He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there
