Remote Start Installation

At my designated dealer (Loeber Motors, Chicago) I was flatly refused my request for installation of a remote start option on my SmartForTwo. They claim that it will interfere with the existing remote functions (doorlock etc.). I currently own two Mitsu models (2005 & 2006) both of which have similar keys with multiple built in remote functions and installing remote start (controlled via a separate fob, mind you) posed no problems whatsoever.

Can anybody shed more light on this?

Update: I Just discovered other threads on this subject. No need to reply here.

Thanks.

I've heard it'll void the warranty. But that's all I know.

I was told by my dealership that "You can have a remote starter installed, but it will void the warranty". That's good enough for me. My little smartie will not get a remote starter. (Once I get her, that is.)

I don't see why it would void warranty but it might be a difficult issue because there is no park and it is essentially illegal then.

I don't know about smart specifics, but I do know that there is a special type of remote start which can be put in a manual transmission car. My buddy owns an auto customizing company and hes been liscenced to install a specific type of remote start in manual cars. It requires the driver to do a sequence of things upon leaving the car including setting the E-brake and locking the doors in order for it to function. Maybe its need for the doors to be locked has something to do with why it would interfere with the smart key buttons?

Dis information and mis information is king... anyone who takes a dealer or car salesman's word for something is bound to be BSed a lot.

There are very few things you can do to VOID your warranty...thanks to the Magnuson Moss warranty Act a Federal Law

If you install a aftermarket remote start system properly it can not damage any system or subsystem in the Smart fortwo

If the install is a hack job and the cheapo remote start system causes some problem like door locks quit functioning the dealer must determine of the door locks failed or were caused to fail by the remote start...if they can prove the remote start caused the failure then you must pay to repair the door locks......Th rest of the new car warranty is still in force! If your fortwo will not shift into reverse IT matters not that a remote start aftermarket device is installed..... the two systems do not have any interaction ( as long as the installer did not hack the shift control wires)

If you install a Alpine head unit in place of the factory Radio 9 and the anti lock brakes fail they can not deny a warranty claim for the anti lock brakes.... but if your new amp blows the door speakers up you can not make a warranty claim for new speakers...But the rest of you warranty is still in force!

Magnuson Moss makes a distinction between the modification and the warranty claim.... and places the proof of what caused a failure on the dealer .... a shiny new K&N air filter can not cause a rear differential to leak

There are remote start options for a manual transmission car..

Problem we have is this car requires the shift lever to be in Park to get the key out (I believe)... Park leaves the trany in Reverse gear and clutch engaged...

Remote start requires Neutral gear selection and Parking brake applied.
