SmartDigger-I feel your pain.It certainly is frustrating whenever unanticipated and unwanted things like this happen to your little prized toy that you are so proud of.I do think that the dowel rod suggestion makes the most out of the unfortunate circumstance. There is NO alleviation of dissappointment in knowing that there are others of us that have had the same experience.
Brabus007-It does seem like the functional design was not thought out very well. The pseudo-carpet `merely has the appearance of being able to do the intended job.Oh well,as they say-"poopage occurs".Lets hope that this is the only thing that is an anticipointment.

I have no clue what you guys mean by "hasp" or "hold back the carpet while in the engine bay". So, you have to pull back the engine cover's carpet to get inside the engine?

Pictures?

Hello Neonspinnazz-
Yep,to get into the engine compartment it is necessary to lift the capet up.there is a metal lid (for lack of better vocabulary) arraingement that you will open up by using the fingerscrew device that you will see there .It has a wing design that allows you to unscrew and then later re-screw the "lid" back down. This is all in your operator's manual. In order to actually get to everything,it is necessary to prevent the carpet-once lifted up- from flopping back down while you are busy doing other stuff down in there. The provided solution is a hasp or hook that is intended to be hooked into a rectangular notch. It is not overly difficult to figure out once you are in the mindset that you are going to get to the engine. The hasp is plastic and you will find it on the right side of the carpet once you pull the carpet up.There is a convenient black little loop in the center of the carpet that is to enable the easy pull up of the carpet. If you pull the carpet up as far as it will be allowed to pull up ,a rectangular notch will be seen. This will be the only evident place where the hasp will fit in.
At least thats the way it worked for me.Now comes the caution------Dont be overly aggressive in trying to get the hasp hooked in the notch OR too agressive in unfastening the hasp from the notch once you are finished up with whatever you are doing in there.Apparently most people havent had the traumatic experience of ripping the hasp essentially out of the carpet that it is (chinsily) woven into. But there are some of us out here who HAVE had the misfortune of doing it, so forwarned is fore-armed.Good luck and let me know if this is making any sence to YOU.

I use paint stir-sticks to hold up the carpet. I carry them in the tailgate compartment and they do an excellent job.

No problems with the hasp thus far, and I've played around in the engine area quite a bit. But I'm planning on using a curtian rod in place of it if it fails. Doubles as something to mount a cover to...
