Time to buy back those SUVs, right? Then we repeat the process in 20 years.
don't want to hijack this thread, but i highly doubt that gas will stay where it's at currently. my opinion is that OPEC is just screwing with our economy. they found out what kind of damage they can do by jacking up the price of crude oil, so now they're dropping it, giving us a false sense of security. 6-12 months from now, you'll see it back up again and like you said, we'll be repeating the process but not in 20 years, more like 20 months OR LESS!

back to the initial question, NO (like i said before) you can't sell your reservation. YES you can buy it and resell it, but for what? 'maybe' a couple hundred bucks at best?

if anyone doesn't want, need or can afford their smart when it comes in, the best thing they can do is ORPHAN IT!

Agreed. The no-selling of reservations was created to prevent people from selling for a $5,000 profit and screwing with natural market forces. Make them take delivery, wait a month or two,get their own title, and then sell it used. How angry would the average buyer be if they found out people were scoping up reservations and selling each one for a 5k profit? Nah, a reservation should have no value. The car has value.

To the OP - If you don't want the car, tell Smart to give you the 99 bucks back. If you try to take delivery, go through paperwork hassle (including a ding on your credit report from the new financing), you'll find you can no longer sell it as-is for enough profit to justify the trouble. Add in something unique like signature paint or graphics, and it will sell faster.

Does anybody know if any of the Smart dealers are taking any 08 Smarts in trade for the new 09's and if so what is being offered?

I know Smart Center Easton in Columbus Ohio took a car for a trade, but I don't know what they offered the person for it.

Most dealers by now should be swamped with orphans because the novelty is wearing off, you can get very nice cars for the price of a Smart (they are selling Mustang convertibles for less than I paid for my Smart Cabrio) and the economy is not as robust as it was a year ago.

My advice - keep the reservation, purchase the Smart and enjoy the hell out of it. It is by far the most fun car I have ever owned. I can afford any car I want and I'll take the Smart over all of them. We have other cars in our garage and 9 times out of 10 the Smarts are gone before any other.
