Service options for Smart

Was doing my usual shopping run at Wal-Mart today and was talking to one of the guys from the service dept. He said they do not have any filters (oil nor air) for the Smart and won't until they've sold one million Smart cars in the U.S. He said they don't even have all filters for Hyundais yet!

So... are there any options beside going to the dealer for basic servicing yet? Like oil changes (any national chains servicing Smarts yet?), brake jobs, mufflers, etc.? Also, it appears that if you keep stock size wheel/tire combo, the only game in town are the Continental tires, right?

I am hoping that other options expand, but the guy at Wally World was not optimistic for any major acceptance by generic car service stations of the Smart any time soon. Reminds me a bit of an old Buick Opel I once had. Loved the car... built by Isuzu and imported by GM. Buick promised they'd carry parts for at least 10 yrs. Had the car (bought used) about 2 yrs. when the carb went and needed replaced. NO ONE would touch the car and Buick said, time to junk it! I was heart-broken as I loved that car and didn't realize the carb could've probably been re-built (was a teen at the time). I just get nervous when mechanics turn and avert their eyes when you say Smart.

I can't comment on tires but for oil changes all it takes is 15 minutes in your garage... you don't even have to put it up on jacks... $15 worth of reusable supplies(you can get everything at Walmart), $12 oil filter from the dealer and you can get the oil at Walmart too. Plus the piece of mind that you did the work and it was done properly.

You don't even need the "dealer" oil filter either, other options are available...check the posts on oil filters on this site. I'm using a Mobile 1 #108 on mine now and no problems. But you should use a new "crush" washer on the oil plug each time it is remover to drain oil and so far, only available thru the dealership. Just buy a few extras and that shouldn't be a problem either...Good luck!

Opinions differ on the crush washer... I was told by the Napa guy that I could re-use mine and have had no issues after 2000 miles.

Understand that opinion but the real question here is if the oil all seeps out will the NAPA guy fix the vehicle? I'm running a Honda Ridgeline and always replace the crush washer on any plug when I change the fluids. Rather be safe then sorry...thought Honda crush washers are way too cheap when compared th smart crush washers.

It would be useful for someone to post the dimensions of that copper crush washer; it's probably obtainable from various other sources than the dealer. My dealer is 120 miles away, and over a mountain pass... not so convenient to drop in.

Yesterday I had the oil changed at a Pennzoil quick lube place. The guys were intriqued by the car. Having informed myself on this site and others I stayed involved in the process to oversee the work. But first I had to find a filter. The Mitsubishi part number for the smart filter is 1230A040, and the NAPA 7040 is a correct replacement. While this item shows up in the NAPA cataloging system, unfortunately (according to the NAPA store clerk) it's not actually available yet.

Someone here did some cross-referencing and found the Yamaha 5DM-13440-00 is the same filter as the Mitsubishi. So I went up the street to the Yamaha dealer, and about 10 seconds later the $15.95 filter was on the counter. It's tiny, a lot smaller than a Chevy V8 filter for instance. Approx 2" by 2" dia.

So, up the street another few blocks to the quicklube place, where they rinsed the screen on the drain plug while the oil was draining, put in 3.5 qts of 0w40 Mobil 1, and also changed the transaxle lube with 2.5 qts of 75w90 synthetic gear oil. Reused the crush washer. This morning, the exterior of the drain plug is dry, same with the filter, no sign of drips under the car.

I am likely to use the dealer for scheduled service, but this was an early lube change as a sort of mid-break-in thing at 1400 miles that I hope will ensure the best for the internals. Last week I stressed the car somewhat with a fast trip from LA to east of Seattle, including some 4800 rpm 3rd-gear climbs up the mountains and corresponding off-throttle descents on the downslopes. Except for the final 70 miles in WA, I was off the freeways from about the north end of CA. A good vigorous break-in run with varied speeds and loads. The little smart did great...

Measured with a vernier caliper:
O.D. 32mm
I.D. 22.5mm
Thickness 1mm

The O.D. may not be super critical as long as it is reasonable. The I.D. is. The thickness will affect the horizontal positioning of the oil pickup screen (don't know how critical that might be).

My original washer is on its third squeeze. Next time it is out I will measure the thickness with a micrometer and compare that to a new one as a measure of how "crushable" it actually is.
