Have you driven one of the new 451's yet? Little to no acceleration inertia in the two different models I drove. I'm just sayin'.

Its amazing that the human can learn to push forward to go faster, pull back to go slower. You'll get used to it.

I agree, you should pull to up shift and push to down shift. That's the way a shifter kart works and really, this is just a shifter kart for two.

VW Bug shifter is the same way - its the opposite from what would seem intuitive. When your body slides back from inertia you have to be pushing the shifter forward. When your body is sliding forward due to inertia you have to be pulling the stick back. It takes a bit to get used to. Also - the airplane "stick" or "steering wheel" is correctly intuitive - pull towards you to go up, push away from you to go down.

I agree, I had the earlier BMW steptronic as described and it didn't bother me, I also got used to other transmission controls on other cars too, ya just acclimate and learn to get the most out of it

Fwiw I know people opened up the BMW step shifters and switched the wires or something to have it operate the opposite way - perhaps, if it really bugs you on the Smart, there will be some easy way to mod it similarly.

i know the Human mind can adjust/adapt and learn...
however if you're used to driving something one way (the correct method), and another company does it the wrong way. i think there will be some complaints about it.
But if i've never driven steptronic or any variations there of, then there will be nothing to really adjust to just learn =)
This is something i just find irritating because MB didn't really look into this matter. The paddles they got right, which i'm glad =)

oh and Mrvvrroomm, i did test drive the the 451's and yes maybe not much inertia, but that does not change the fact that the shifting functionality is wrong and that's what this thread is all about. :P
