Shipping Notice?

For those of you who have already received your Smarts, did you receive an email or some notification saying that your car had been shipped or did you only get the call from your local dealer when it made port or arrived at the dealership?

I received a phone call from my salesman. And, my smart arrive almost 6 weeks to the day from the point that it was shipped. The key is getting the VIN # (I received mine approximately two weeks after I received my phone call). Once you get that, you can ask your dealer for a copy of your R11 Specific Unit Details Report. That will give you among other things, the month your car was manufactured, the shipping status (shipped or distributor stock), the ETA (far more accurate than the DDE) and your smart's configuration/price. This is what I relied upon. Also, seeing that you're on the east coast, you should be able to track your car during shipping as long as you have your VIN#.

All regions and all dealers have different approaches for notifying its customers. But, the R11 is a smart form that should be used by all. It took my dealer about 30 seconds to pull my R11 up on the computer.

Good luck and hang in there. These last couple of months are tough, but the car is worth every second!

Nothing from smart, but a email from dealer about 2 weeks before production letting me know my car was on their most recent reservation lead list. The VIN followed about two weeks later.

Got an e-mail from smartusa saying my smart will be at my dealership within 30 days. Then got an e-mail from my sales consultant a day later saying my car will be here soon. About 1.5 weeks later my car was at the dealership waiting for me to pickup.

I got a sort of vague e-mail telling me that it should be in within 30 days. That was about 45 days ago, and it's not in yet. They also said someone would call me in a day or two. No one did, but when I went to the dealer to get a longer test drive, I talked to the guy who had my account, and he said they were delayed. Cars due April 1 came in about April 22, and mine was due in May. But he had the VIN #, and I was able to track it from there, set up insurance (couldn't get a quote without the VIN because the smart wasn't in their system) and financing, etc.

I received no notification at all until the call today from the dealer telling me I could pick the car up! I'll get it tomorrow. I wasn't really expecting the car till June or July, based on the DDE. A pleasant surprise to say the least.

Apparently there are no guide lines for the dealers to follow. I think it would good PR for all the dealers to post what their smartcenter's pollicy is about customer notification.
