smart Ambassadors
Whether we're die-hard Waiters, or Orphan Adopters, there is such a joy in sharing the smart with other folks. One old gentleman passing Cloud9 parked in her first 'little' spot, in the parking lot triangle at the end of a row, said with a bright grin, "That's just damned cute." I grinned back. He asked, I answered, "smart fortwo. Daimler/Chrysler. smart center Portland." He looked back several times, shaking his head up and down. He wants one.
In my work today, I invited my client, a striking, ample artist, in for a look. She wants one for her daughter in Portland. When I got home, I called and gave her more of the Orphan and coupe skinny.
This Ambassador-ship is, by definition, grass-roots. Our forums provide a national round-table, as it were, but our individual spheres proves the influence.
One idea already posted involves fliers to hand out. I like that idea alot. (I'm on the hunt for the 'Ticket Holder' accessory... )
True, not everyone remains an Ambassador forever, I guess, because the first one I spied was here on the Central Oregon Coast. It was from B.C. The top was down, and we were stopped at a light. I looked over, got a huge grin on my face, and something like the old man said, and the guy could barely eke out "smart." And then spat out, "...by Mercedes." But, the smartie has been part of my psyche since, aloof rich guy notwithstanding.
As of Leap Friday, I'm sure glad to be a better Ambassador.
God, I love my car.

Susie, I've drank an a bottle of Chianti and some Zin tonight amongst one other person and I don't think I have it in me to write that I am a sphere...maybe another bottle, but either way I'm not happy until I get my Smart Cabrio fully loaded. It pisses me off that people order these cars without all the options.

Well said, Susie!
Don't think many have put it better into words, Susie. Thanks so much. You are exactly correct. For those of us, most of us, that love this car as much as we do, we cannot share our joy with enough people. We are the ambassadors. We are the leading edge of this frontier and what a "hoot" it is to be here.

believe it or not the day I placed my order this incredulous man stopped infront of the dealer and started asking me (with my 2 year old son in tow) all about the car. I did my best he left with a huge smile on his face. I'll continue to do my best

I am always asked about the car. When I waiting to pick up my wife a gentleman said he only saw these cars in France. Then he asked about the mileage and wanted to trade his Ford Explorer. I said, "No thanks!"
I also started a blog and have website with my license plate ( www.im-smrt.com) web address. I hope to make some progress this evening on it. I also looked into having the web address on the car but the companies I looked at wanted like $40. Must be a better way...
Having cards would be a good idea...

Susie,
Great Post, and dcrooks, I ran with your idea and did the same thing. A little personalization never hurt anything:

Yes, finders fees would be nice!
I am a believer in the more info the better. You just have to have better filters to filter out the stupid info...
