Sweet! I always wanted an old 60's Caddy hearse. My plan was to mount a casket in the back, raised off the floor a couple inches at the corners with down-firing woofers and the associated amps stored inside. Lots of room for that thump to develop (a deep bass note has a wavelength longer than the interior of the smart...), and you can be pretty sure most people won't open a coffin to steal your stereo parts.

Dr.Wicked-

Just checked out the hearse. There is NO way you can tell me you would drive past ANY other hearse and not acknowledge it. You may say, "Well a hearse is special". The Smart is special right off the assembly line. Not many brand new cars have character right off the assembly line. Oddly enough, it has happy go lucky character.

When you drive it people love to wave, not just other smart owners. Similar to the same reaction if you were driving an old Beetle with painted purple with flowers and peace signs on it. You really won't seem like a threatening individual so people feel it's OK to be happy and spread it your way.

I have a really good friend who lost his '72 M&M about 2 years ago (wife sold it behind his back while he was away - he got rid of the wife shortly after). He loves to be angry at the world, doesn't like to be happy and the hearse helped him fulfill a special individuality, be it a morbid individuality it set him apart from the others. I know for a fact he would be jumping around like a chihuahua on speed if he saw a nicely restored tastefully modded vintage hearse driving down the road. It's not something you see everyday. Right now the smarts fall in that category. Until they are more of a common sight most, maybe 95%, are going to act that way when they see one. MOST of the early adopters/owners DO have a special bond.

I have passed a smart owner that acted like I was a crazy person when I waved going by. To them, "it's just a car" that gets them from point A to point B. Now, after seeing the fabulous work you're doing on the M&M - I know your a car guy. Your outlook may change once you get the smart. At this point in time, in most areas of the US if pulled up in a parking lot with a perfectly restored vintage hearse and a brand new stock smart - the smart will get more positive happy attention from almost everyone. Now once that happens you will be angry. That's the one thing I find weird as I have some decent vintage rides and the smart gets more people talking.

I'm on the fence here. I can see and understand both sides.

Most motorcycle riders will wave. Many times I'll wave or wave back. Sometimes I'm just enjoying the ride and not looking at the other riders. Sometimes I just see them too later. Or I may be changing gears, turning or otherwise involved in operating the vehicle. And quite frankly, I'm usually feeling friendly and don't mind waving. Sometimes I feel less friendly and don't really care to wave to anyone and everyone. This usually happens in the summer when it's 100+ degrees on a sunny day and it seems like lots of folks are riding and waving.

I always love to wave to the kids though. Sometimes thy're in cars, trucks or school busses. So even if I'm in a less than friendly mood I'll paste on a smile and wave to the youngins.

Now with the smart I'm still waiting to see another one. And I'll probably wave but forget the official SCOA wave. Hopefully someone won't take it personal if I don't happen to wave.

Acting silly towards them? Last I checked waving at someone is just being friendly. Which is something I don't do very often, because of how society is today.
