2009 Toyota Prius Touring Edition

If you're trying to get the most for your money when buying a new family car, you might think that a $20,870 four-cylinder Chrysler Sebring would be a better buy than a $24,803 Toyota Prius Touring. But according to a new Consumer Reports analysis, the Prius is one of the best values you can buy, while the Sebring ranks near the bottom of its class.

For the first time, we've created a way to identify models that do the best job combining good performance and reliability with a low owner cost over the first five years. In other words, the most bang for your buck.

MORE AT CONSUMER REPORTS

Rounding out the top five models in overall value are the Mini Cooper, Volkswagen Rabbit, Honda Civic EX, and Honda Fit. Overall, our study highlights the best values in nine vehicle categories, from small cars to pickup trucks. Among SUVs, for instance, the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Santa Fe earned the top spots among small and midsized SUVs, respectively. The Toyota Avalon proved to be the best value for upscale cars. And Honda's Odyssey and Ridgeline give you the most for your money among minivans and pickups.

A low price doesn't necessarily make a car a good value. Of the more than 30 small cars that we've recently tested, for example, the budget-priced $15,355 Smart ForTwo and the $16,470 Chevrolet Aveo5 were at the bottom of the value list, primarily because their low test scores mean they aren't very good cars. Even the $15,543 Toyota Yaris sedan, which has one of the lowest five-year owner costs, did not make the grade in value because of its mediocre road-test score.

Stretching Your Dollars

To determine the best car values, we looked at our overall road-test scores, five-year owner-cost estimates, and predicted reliability Ratings for each of the more than 300 vehicles we've recently tested. We divided each vehicle's five-year owner cost by its overall road-test score to get the cost of each test- score point, or what we call "bucks per bang." The lower the cost, the better.

Then to ensure that our top values are also models that hold up well over time, we limited our choices to vehicles with above-average predicted reliability Ratings based on our latest Annual Auto Survey, which details subscribers' experiences with more than 1.4 million vehicles.

Our owner-cost estimates include six major elements: depreciation, fuel economy, insurance, interest on financing, maintenance and repair, and sales tax. They provide an estimate of how much a vehicle will likely cost you to own over the first five years, a typical ownership period. Depreciation is the largest cost factor by far, accounting for 51 percent of the overall owner cost in the first five years. Fuel cost is second, at 14 percent, based on $2 per gallon for regular and $2.20 for premium. Because we factor in depreciation, we assume that the cars are traded in at the end of five years. For details on how we calculate owner-cost estimates see our most & least expensive to own report.

Our road-test scores are the result of more than 50 individual tests, including braking, handling, fuel economy, comfort and convenience, interior quality, cargo room, and more. So they reflect whether a vehicle is a good overall package.

Cost vs. Performance

The Prius Touring came in with the best bucks-per-bang cost of $325, thanks to one of the lower owner- cost estimates in the list—$26,250 over five years—and a relatively high road-test score of 80 points out of 100. With its hybrid premium, the Prius doesn't have the least expensive sticker price in its class, but its excellent fuel economy of 42 mpg overall and solid resale value help give it a low owner cost.

The Prius is followed closely in our list by the Mini Cooper and VW Rabbit hatchbacks, with a bucks-per- bang figure of $330. Five small cars, the Mazda Miata sports car, and the Toyota Camry Hybrid family sedan follow with results ranging from $340 to $365. One of those small cars, the redesigned Honda Fit, has the best owner cost in the list, only $24,000 over five years.

The base Toyota Prius, Mazda3 hatchback, and four-cylinder versions of the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Sonata, and Honda Accord also had good bucks-per-bang results of under $400. Five hybrids made the list, including the top three family cars.

We also found huge differences between the best and worst values. The Hummer H2, for example, is a terrible deal, with a bucks-per-bang figure of $3,620 because of a high five-year owner cost of about $82,250 and a low test score of only 23. Similarly, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's $2,320 figure is a result of its relatively high owner cost of $39,750 and a very low test score of 17. The Wrangler's reliability has also been much worse than average.

The four-cylinder Chrysler Sebring has a bucks-per-bang cost of $740. The Smart ForTwo and Chevrolet Aveo5 had results of $895 and $870, respectively, which were the worst among all small and family cars.

Of the 41 vehicles in our best values list, all but the Mini, VW, and Volvo C30 are from Asian manufacturers, with 17 built by Toyota, 10 built by Honda, four by Nissan, and three by Hyundai. This reflects the fact that those automakers build many good, well-rounded vehicles that do well in our road tests and reliability Ratings. They also have relatively low owner costs, thanks largely to good resale value and relatively good fuel economy.

At a time when many people need to make every dollar count, our best values help guide you to new cars that rate well in performance, reliability, and cost.

WHAT "low test scores"? Are they really testing the car for it's original purpose; to get you to and from work and around 'in town', parking with ease and using less gas doing it?

The only issue I can see with it is taking into the dealer for service, as the 10K maintenance charges seem to be pretty steep for a $11-17K vehicle. But that's the MB 'side of the family'. If you can service the car yourself, as many here do, I see no reason to take it to the dealer unless you have a warranty issue. BUT if you're not so mechanically inclined, then I would highly recommend sticking with the dealer over 'Joe the Mechanic' as he probably doesn't have any more clue what to do with your smart as you do.

Slightly off topic

I went through a Burger King drive through yesterday. As is pretty common, there were two employees hanging out the window gawking at my car and asking questions ... the kid taking my money and the manager. The kid asked a few of the usual, then the manager piped up with one I hadn't heard before, "I guess it gets you from point A to point B, huh?".

Well, yes it does. And, as you said, that is its primary designed function. It isn't a sports car, not a luxury car. It is a transporter. But, I really like my smart and never thought of it as 'settling' before. The guy's attitude was that I just couldn't afford a better car. Maybe I was being dense, but it never even occurred to me previously that people would view a smart owner with a degree of pity. Screw him, I'm proud of my car.

On the other hand: On Panama City Beach this weekend there is an event going on called Thunder Beach. I took a drive out to check out the bikes (and bikinis). As expected, the traffic on front beach road was at a crawl. My smart got lots of recognition from both the bikers and the spectators.

Sorry about the little tangent. That Burger King manager's comment has been bugging me. He probably is one who figures a vehicle's merits are directly proportional to its curb weight.

Oh please. This a "niche" car. It is never going to appeal to the masses. Mostly because the masses need more than two seats. Your righteous indignation is certainly endearing, and noted. Move on.

And here I switched to my Smart from a cute little BMW Z4 roadster (also Merlot Red). NOT settling!

No real answer to this; CR tests all its cars the same way. Some they like, some they don't. A different test for the smart (the "around town" test?) would skew the test results, making comparison among cars invalid [remember all the angst over the IIHS "non standard" test results?] Maybe when more microcars get here the smart can/will be compared to others in that class.

Not sure if this was meant for me, "NCC1701" or both of us, but that's not the point.

The point being is that it IS a car that gets YOU (and maybe a friend) from "Point A to Point B" and in doing so, is fun, safe and gets great MPG's. THAT'S IT!

Yes, it IS a "niche car", but compare it to other cars in the same "niche" and see how it rates. It's like comparing a peanut butter to cracker. Makes no sense....

Uh, why are you letting a Burger King manager's comment get to you? This is a guy who talks to you as he leans out of his "office" filled with high schoolers and aerosolized grease. A bit of envy and self-loathing were probably part of that comment.

And before anyone flames me about fast food jobs being "real" jobs, I was a manager at a der Wienerschnitzel in SoCal. In high school.

I'm impressed - I can't even spell "der Wienerschnitzel" -
Hey, in high school a job is a job; one can't really be choosy. I mowed lawns, lifeguarded and pumped gas. All made me good money and is honest work. No one should look down upon someone because of their job - they're all needed, regardless of the 'status' - 'nuff said.
