smart beats new VW diesel mileage

EPA figures for the new 2009 VW diesel Jetta are in.

Four cyl 2L 6 speed manual tranmission = 30mpg city - 41mpg hwy -
34mpg combined

Four cyl 2L 6 speed automatic trans = 29mpg city - 40mpg hwy -
33mpg combined

smart = 33mpg city - 41mpg hwy - 36 mpg combined

This could be part of the problem: Curb Weight, lbs. 3230

Our Corvette actually weighs a few pounds less.

Not bad, but the cost of Diesel is so much higher. It'd be better to get a Yaris.

my '98 VW New Beetle TDI (5spd-manual). Around town it was around 42-43mpg and on long trips just shy of 50mpg and we were typically 70 to 75mph on the highway. You're probably right about the extra weight but the EPA tests have changed as well. Diesel is very high (as well as gas) around Chicago. The torque was unbelievable on that bug but it was just too small for 2 teenaged kids in the back - not regrets but I thought diesel was going to make a come back?

You are not comparing apples to apples here.
These are 5 seat cars with far more combined practicality. All are very good.
My Fit is rated at 50mpg highway. My old diesel Jetta would get near 60.
When I buy my diesel Smart I would like to get 70mpg.
