Now if you're up to date with high schoolers you'll notice that the smart is not a "cool" car nor is it a "chick magnet"...
I think you'll find soon enough that the reason for that is that no one has one yet. You show up with the first one, and it'll eventually be brutally obvious that a Fortwo is a chick-magnet, and very, *very* cool.
I'd be willing to bet you're going to start a trend.
Smart-hate: it's not in the least bit about facts and logic; it's about fear. When someone hates on you and your ride, just ask yourself, "what is he so afraid of?"
Then smile and say,"I understand..." and walk away. Don't say it all snippy or superior; say it innocently the way Peter Sellers did as the character Chauncy Gardener in Kosinsky's Being There.
Which you should rent if you haven't seen it, or see it again if you haven't seen it lately
I resent when the smart is called ugly and I get hostile at times. Who are these people, designers or complete idiots?
Yes there are a few views that are not flattering and a Brabus overcomes that but on the whole the regular smart is a great package.
Let me add this however...this morning I had to make a left being in line with others after the light turned green and as I was just coming out of the turn the smart slowed as if it wanted to say 'you know maybe we shouldn't proceed you may have left the garage door open' In the mean time there's a car on my rear and I feel bad about that. This phenomenon is fairly common and not right.
Out of the 50 positive (and a few possible sales) and maybe 5 neutral there was only one bash.
College kid showing off to his friends. You get the idea. And it was a drive by. Wuss. I just got the one case where ignorance was incurable. Nothing to worry about, though.
I've used the "I understand" Bit on the neutral parties.
I have a co-worker who will without a bit of shame take any opportunity to bash my Smart and it was from day one when i took him for a ride in it after his POJ Taurus broke down again. He said lots of negative things about it and will even talk about it behind my back calling it anything from Ugly to the ultimate demise "The Fart Car. Of course he will take the time to remind me of some of those "safety issues" raised in the media blitz surrounding the head on crash test done just before the demise of the big two. he even got himself a 2003 PT Cruiser just for the sheer joy of competing with me.
This is without a doubt a pure issue of Jealousy and pure ignorance. Yes there are those who will bash the Smart. Case in point, showed it to a friend i saw last night and he called it a cartoon car. Now that was actually funny. Anyone else who makes their jokes and there are those who shall i just say "Ha Ha that is original" Then there are those i will give the grade of an A for that originality, the A standing for a$&* H&*&e
I have a co-worker who will without a bit of shame take any opportunity to bash my Smart... <mondo snippo>
Enh... He is water, you are a duck's back. Let it slide. After all, you didn't buy your car for anyone other than *you*, right? Who cares what anyone else thinks?
If they won't let it go, tell 'em to go rent a life.
What's odd is that people that hate it can't let it go. A general car discussion forum I'm on has some people that don't like it, and that's fine, but every time the subject comes up, off they go. Okay, you hate the car, we get it, why do we have to keep hearing about it? Tons of cars I don't like, but I see no need to go on about it, especially to someone that has one. Way to win friends and influence people.

(EDIT: *Especially* if you get a Cabriolet...)
I think you just tried to sell me a cabrio!
Hmmm...make a good entrance...have it waxed up and drive very slowly...got it...
