I've read on a couple of threads that a few of you have bought books on the smart car. So far, I've found The Little Book of Smart by Paul Jackson; The Smart Story by Paul Guinness; and, Smart Thinking by Tony Lewin. If you've bought one or more, I'd appreciate hearing your comments – your reviews. I'm sure others would too.
And, if you are a "smart book" collector, you should be aware that a new release is pending: Smart: Small Car, Big Deal by Willi Diez and Jurgen Zollter. Pre-orders are being taken on Amazon at $19.70 (list is $29.99).
Finally, I found another book related to the smart. Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) was involved in the production of Sideways: a smart art project. It was released in conjunction with the beginning of sales of the smart in the US. It's less about the smart and more about the art and being "green." There are many pages reprinted on the web (not on Amazon where it's available for about $40) -- Google it.
Here's the press release from the Daimler site:
Author prize for new smart book: smart also successful as a book.
The highly regarded "Motor Presse Club" has awarded the author prize 2008 to the book "sideways. a smart art project" which was recently presented. The distinguished jury of the "MPC car book prize" awards this special prize every year for outstanding literary achievement in the field of car books.
For the award-winning book, smart and the publishing house "Gestalten Verlag Berlin" asked artists to submit contributions on the subject of the environment and smart. More than 100 creative professionals from around the world from the fields of photography, graphic design, painting, architecture and fashion styling present their artistic works on 248 pages. They tackle the question of ecology and mobility and provide fresh and thought-provoking ideas. smart has been concerned with the question of how urban mobility can be made environmentally compatible since the birth of the brand. This book from smart - for years the car make with the production vehicle boasting the lowest CO2 emissions worldwide - shows that environmental considerations can be approached hand in hand with good aesthetic design.
The Motor Presse Club e.V. (MPC) is an association of journalists, publicists and industry employees. The association has close contacts with press, radio and television which enables it to support non-profit-making objectives concerning all aspects of cars, technology and traffic. The organisation awards the "MPC car book prize" every year in five categories and also the highly coveted author prize - which the makers of the new smart book were able to take home this year. This year the jury included well-known personalities such as Chris Bangle (head designer at BMW), Prof. Dr. Florian Hufnagel (Director Pinakothek der Moderne, Design), Holger Jung (advertising agency Jung von Matt), Wolfgang Peters (FAZ) and Michael Ramstetter (editor-in chief ADAC Motorwelt).
"sideways" was officially presented within the framework of the US market launch in New York in March 2008 and it is available from the publisher dgv and in book stores at a price of € 29.90.
